Hope I put this in the right forum but if not sorry. I want to build myself a nice hunting rifle in 6.5x55 Swede. The only thing I can find locally is the Tikka T3 and I'm not a huge fan. I also would like to learn how to build a custom rifle and was thinking this would be a good way to start and learn.

I want to build a descent rig with out breaking the bank and was wondering what you guys thought about using a Stevens 200 as a donor action. I can pick up a gently used rifle in 270 Win for about $200. To the action I would pick up a new barrell(still doing research but have been looking at Kreiger) a new stock, i like a thumbhole so want to go that route, and a new trigger like a Rifle Basix. What do you think, good idea? After I get the parts I will decide if I will attempt to put it together(depending how much reading and comfortable i am with doing it) or send it to a gunsmith. Thanks guys.

Excellent choice and one I have used. They shoot great out of the box. They mod easily with least cost in smithing. If you can get a rifle basix count yourself lucky, but the timney is also a good solution. Boyds has crazy deals some times which you can luck onto some superb deals, but the base prices are really good too. I have a McGowen barrel and am enjoying it. Krieger is excellent, but you pay the price for smithing. Shilen or McGowen have prefits already chambered. Suggest you contact Jerry Teo at mystic precision for some advice. Also, Juan Valdez has some good deals and support there too. Enjoy the build. I sure did and continue to do. Elky.....

Thanks, I'm going to do some more research into other brands so it's good to hear a few more company names from someone who uses the product and is happy. Just seeing what everyone though of using the stevens 200 as a platform to build off of.
