Ya ...Ya I know 2 zillion posts Im told about the 200 but I just bought one in 308 from sir. Some say a boring round but my hunting does not require a 300 win mag for 30 yard whitetails. Have you 200 owners been happy with the performance and could you recomend a scope option. Again nothing over a 100-150 yds mostly 50 yards. And do you have a specific load (factory) you like? Thanks

I hunt with a 308 rifle at close range like you, but not with a Steven's. I use 180gr. winchester power points. They are accurate and have a great stopping power at this range. Have fun with your new rifle :)

At 30 yards accuracy means nothing in a 308 or most any other calibers for that matter. We are talking rifles not bows.

If you are going to shoot factory ammo, then anything of the shelf will get your 30 yard Whitetail.

The 308 is a great all round caliber as many know. I would put a 3-9x40 on it or a straight 6x40. I think that would cover most of your shooting conditions. You should have no problen finding a scope in these powers within your price range.

IMHO, if you are expecting no further than 50yd shots. I would suggest that you stay with open sights.

Ya I know the scope makes the rifle look cool, but on the closer shots mostly all you will see is fur. It makes it a bit tough to pick a spot (shoulder/vitals).

If they make a scope that you can still use the open sights (?) that would be ideal, or possibly a scope meant for a shotgun might be worth a look..

What conceivable use would a scope with more than 4x be at ranges of 100 yards or less?

My inclination would be to go with a fixed 4x or even a fixed 2.5x for shots under 200 yards. If you're hunting in close cover and not long range then you'll be way further ahead with a low power scope. Or irons, but I don't think the Stevens comes with sights.

1.5 - 6 x 36, 4200 Bushnell, or a 2-7x32 Bushnell Legend, 2-7x32 3200 Bushnell, 2-7 Leupold. anything like this since the 200 Stevens is plain barrel.

My Ruger MKII in .308win sports a Bushnell Elite 2x7. I find it is a nice fit for the type of hunting I do with it.

You will find the Stevens 200 is quite accurate out of the box - as with most Savage barrels. I had a 200 in 7mm Rem Mag and it shot very well. But I am a Gunnut and I don't need two 7mm's.

Good luck,

James

A Leupold VXII 2-7x33 would be a good choice

For sure, but if the gun budget is "Stevens 200" the scope budget is likely on a similar scale. (correct me if I'm wrong HHB!) The Bushnell Legend 2-7 x 32 would be fine. ;)

..............i have a leupy 2-7x33 i really like but if shots are limited to 200 yards and under, i really like a fixed 2.5 I am starting to really like fixed scopes over variables these days for some reason.

Thanks boys!

Really appreciate the advise, I'll have a pic or two when the scope is mounted! With the wife in pre-med were pretty much broke so for now this is what I could get. However when shes done ...good golly Im a gonna spend (LOL)!

What about a holosight? I truthfully dont know very much about them but guys have mentioned it to me based on my shooting situation.
Debate away! Catch at the range!
