As already been mentioned, all prices will adjust to what has been a surge in the US$. In time, prices will reflect the crash in the US$.

Pretty sure that if all costs were equalized, the Stevens will still rank as one of the lowest, if not the lowest, hunting rifle that WORKS, is accurate and easily customized. That is if a blind mag and pretty heavy trigger is ok with you.

How much are Rem SPS's now?

For my past competition rifle builds, they were all Stevens. My present 223 tactical rifle is built off a SAVAGE cause I wanted the Accutrigger, alloy bottom metal, awesome center feed mag, all housed in a stock that can easily be modified.

There is no way I can match the money invested if I started with a Stevens.

YMMV.

bought a used one with rings for my 11yr old daughter for 275.00 in .243 What a great little rifle. If hunting is something she really wants to keep doing then something a little more expensive will be in the future for her. She sure is acurate with this rifle.

I change my vote.............compared to this I guess they are still a good deal.

What happened to $519 for an SPS.........

Going back to your question....I am not sure at this point. I got mine in 270 for $329. For $329 it was a great deal. I painted that ugly gray stock with green paint that gave it a bit more texture. Now it does not look like a Stevens at all. This is type of a gun which you take into the woods, you rest it against a tree, it topples over, hey no problem. It doesn't hurt to see scratches on the stock. However, $440 for a new one? not so sure anymore if it is a good deal. You can get a very decent used rifle with more features for the same money. It is still a very well built gun. No frills, basic but it is reliable and durable.

I just got a flyer from Cabelas / SIR. They have 200s on special for $339.99.

Calibers listed are .... .223, 243, 22/250, .270, 30/06, 7mmRemMag, 300WM.

The .223s are in stock and as of today she said they have "lots".

I had one in a 22-250 that I bought about 2 years ago when they had a sale on firearms at WSS. Got it for I think $290 incl GST. Was very accurate and nice, but the barrel was almost smoking after 4 or 5 shots and didn't cool down very quickly either. Sold it and bought a BV-12 in the same caliber. I think I paid $549 for the BV and was much happier with the trigger and barrel. Same accuracy though.

Friend bought one in .270 and it needed a recoil pad. Was just a little too rough for use without one. That cost an extra $50 or so and by then I would have considered a higher end model with a better stock included.

It's all relative to what you are doing and what you want. They seemed like a great deal at the $319 price that held for a while but at that time you could still get a Savage package deal for $400 and even if you didn't like the scope it came with it was a nicer looking rifle with the same kind of trigger.

This is a good sign. I recently noticed that one dealer that raised the prices of their firearms at the opportune time has now reduced them somewhat. Perhaps this is the end of the powder/primer famine also.

Hoist the main sail boys. We've rounded the Horn!
