From someone who owned both, and has now sold the Maverick I will say that it depends which model you are after and what you want to do.
For me I bought the Stevens 350 with Ghost Ring sights, and it is a far better deal then the short Maverick.
My Stevens was $250 from Prairie Gun Traders and for a all steel constructed gun with Ghost Rings it can't be beat.
If your looking at a field gun with a longer barrel then the Maverick is a better option, and much lighter.
I personally bought the 350 for shooting slugs and it does that much better than the Maverick. It is also built better in my opinion, and is steel in and out with no plastic parts.
The only 2 complaints I see with the Stevens is the finish, and the trigger.
The finish is not great and will wear quickly but the Maverick painted reciever is just as bad, so really not big deal there.
The trigger on the Stevens is absolutely terrible! That said it is a simple trigger group and 20 minutes polishing 2 areas, and clipping the main/hammer spring a coil or 2 make it much better.
I will be posting a tutorial soon as well as a review of the gun but might not be for a few days.
Like I said, Depends what you are looking for, and in the end I sold the Maverick!
