Hi,

Im looking for an inexpensive black shotgun for wilderness carry and fun at the range. Ive been looking at the Maverick 88 security and the Stevens 320, all in the same price ball park and I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on these two. Quality, reliability etc

Thanks

Take the mave! The mossberg 500 barrels fit it and there's aftermarket stuff that's made for it as well. Iv dropped mine in mud, dirt, water, sand ect and its even fallen off the quad and shoots everytime with no issues. Get the field barrel for it with choke tubes and you will have a great all round defence (with the short barrel) and skeet, hunting shotgun with the longer choked field barrel. I love mine, highy recomend it

Everything he said X2.

Also the Maverick weighs next to nothing and even shooting slugs its really tame.

Best gun for the money.

From someone who owned both, and has now sold the Maverick I will say that it depends which model you are after and what you want to do.

For me I bought the Stevens 350 with Ghost Ring sights, and it is a far better deal then the short Maverick.

My Stevens was $250 from Prairie Gun Traders and for a all steel constructed gun with Ghost Rings it can't be beat.

If your looking at a field gun with a longer barrel then the Maverick is a better option, and much lighter.

I personally bought the 350 for shooting slugs and it does that much better than the Maverick. It is also built better in my opinion, and is steel in and out with no plastic parts.

The only 2 complaints I see with the Stevens is the finish, and the trigger.

The finish is not great and will wear quickly but the Maverick painted reciever is just as bad, so really not big deal there.

The trigger on the Stevens is absolutely terrible! That said it is a simple trigger group and 20 minutes polishing 2 areas, and clipping the main/hammer spring a coil or 2 make it much better.

I will be posting a tutorial soon as well as a review of the gun but might not be for a few days.

Like I said, Depends what you are looking for, and in the end I sold the Maverick! ;)

Is the trigger on the Maverick much better? I have a Mossberg 500 field already and I like it, so if the Maverick is anything like it I would say thats a good gun. Ideally, I want something relatively light, short and cheap. I do like the Maverick perhaps a bit better than the Stevens, but the fact that the Stevens 320 comes with a pistol grip stock and ghost ring sights for the same price is tempting. This gun will be used as a truck gun, backcountry carry gun and just for fun at the range. Im stuck between a lighter, higher quality gun in the maverick and the ghost ring sights and pistol grip stock on the Stevens.

mlehtovaara, is the trigger mod on the Stevens fairly easy to do?

Thanks guys

The mave is very similar to the 500. Trigger feels the same IMHO. Pistol grips are avialable for the mav as well. If you already have a 500, the mav will be a great addition as it uses the same barrel and aftertmarket furniture will fit on both. Iv had no issues with the finish on my mav, in fact its held up better then my friends 500.

There appears to be some confusion on my part. I assumed the 320 was similar to the 350.

My comments are for the Stevens 350, which is an Ithica 37 clone.

The 320 seems to be a completely different gun.

Take a look at the Stevens 350 is all I can say............

I have no experience with the 320.

The trigger on my Maverick was awesome, better than my Benelli. Personally Id go with a Maverick just because Ive got alot of experience with them myself as do many people I know. None of us had any issues whatsoever. I also like the controls and light weight of the maverick alot better. Just my 2 cents

My Maverick has been great, not a single problem. Not the "prettiest girl at the dance", but not a "fat chick" either!

great gun, great value!

Own a Mav and have shot a Stevens. Stevens is a good value for the price and I read lots of positives but my vote is for the Mav because it is at least equal in reliability/value with the bonus of having far more accessories available (via Moss 500 interchangeability).
