Dealer here has on consignment a 16 gauge SxS thats a Stevens, but not a 311. It dosent say 5100,or 530 or anything on it,but Im guessing it is one of these. It feels much lighter and "pointier" than the club like Fox Model B I have in 12 gauge. I picked it up at the store the other day and been thinking about it since. There IS something about a 16 gauge!

It will be a early shotgun built by Stevens that eventually morphed into the 5100 311 series. Savage retained the Stevens name when it bought out Stevens in the late '30's IIRC. The Stevens name was widely recognized for value and performance and Savage kept the name. Yours will have walnut instead of hardwood and some case colours. There is the difference of night and day between a 16 Stevens and a 12 Stevens. The main thing to look for in these guns is the top snap lever position. If it is past centre to the left it will need some gunsmith attention. Open and close the action several times to see if some bubba did not peen the barrel hook to tighten the action and reposition the top lever. The opening and closing will defeat these efforts and the top lever will migrate to the left. Also take the gun down and check the hinge pin for upset metal or shims. Other than that they do break the odd firing pin and the butt stock can crack. Mostly these issues are the result of abuse or heavy usage. If that gun checks out buy it they are great.

Thanks Madtrapper,Ill go have another look keeping that in mind. It does have nice case coloring, and the wood is dark. What got me is it felt like a British double more than a Stevens. Must be the 16 is on a smaller scale frame?

Hi Darryl, how are you doing ? I own a Stevens 5100 in 12 gauge 2 3/4", very solid gun, but never fired. Is it safe to shoot modern loads? Like steel or turkey loads from Winchester?

you can shot lead shot loads from it just fine ,I would not shot any steel thru it until you know what the barrels are choked ,no steel in full choke barrels in these older guns ,lead turkey loads will be fine ,,I would have a gun smith check it out before using any steel shot as it does not behave like lead shot..great gun for busting bunnys ,Dutch
