I just got a really cool old 520 at an auction. My first.

It's ages old. double-hump back receiver, all screws, no pins. (12 gauge 2 3/4)

It's a little rough; wood was painted, some rust.

I *THINK* it works. My handy-dandy strip guide got it broken down and cleaned and nothing looks missing or broken. Doubt it was *ever* cleaned though.

Got a few questions though and i'd be thrilled if anyone could point me in the right direction. A book even.

It has patents on it for 1905 and 07, but no date itself. Can I tell how old it is? trace the history by the serial number?

Function; it doesn't seem to want to cycle without holding down the slide-release. Does a 520 actually need to have shells loaded and be fired in order to cycle without the release held down? Youtube shows people firing them no problems and I don't want to mess with it like that till I have a safe direction.

choke is, I think by the markings (circle-I or C-I) improved cylinder; calipers read out between 0.70 and 0.67 inches, which tracks. Is it safe for slugs? buck and ball? The auction said full fixed choke though, so that's odd (right?).

Bonus if anyone can tell me how to post pics on here. the url thing confuses me.
 
The recoil is supposed to unlock it so it can be pumped, also if you hold the trigger while firing,it will fire on closing the pump slide. If you are unloaded a testing the trigger you have to push the release to pump it.is yours a takedown model?

That is good to know. My 520 will not open unless the pump is held forward during/after firing. Not a big issue for a range-gun but somehwhat problematic for any high-stress use.

I never noticed till I looked at the strip guide, but it is. Aren't they all?
 
These shotguns have a whats called a inertia block. Recoil unlocks the pump. The takedown is very slick on these shotguns, takes down in seconds. Is yours a flot top receiver or the double hump? My 520 is a great built gun. Mine is my truck and camp gun. You just cant kill them.
