Just got my Stevens in .223. Looks pretty nice for a $300 gun.

Barrel was dirty as hell... as expected. No problem. Got the gear and started cleaning. Took a peek down the barrel with a bore light and not the smoothest looking bore I have ever seen :confused:. Not pitted or anything but in a few spots it looks like a few nicks in it :mad: . Not real deep put there they are. Let it soak in some solvent and gave another wipe. No change. Ran a brush through it... same. WTF.

Anyone else have a similar looking bore (in any cal)? Looking to get some input before I call the dealer or put any rounds through it. If it shoots ok, I could care less what it looks like but...
 
They are cut barrels... they are not hand lapped... what did you expect for two ninety nine.:p
Just hackin on ya Nats... get some JB and lap that barrel it will look good on the inside then anyway.;)
 
Probably marks from the boring process. A factory barrel isn't hand lapped after boring. The rifling isn't cut, it is button pulled. That is why you will notice the grooves are smooth, they were pressed in. The lands were untouched and still show the boring marks. As you and every Savage shooter knows, the accuracy isn't affected by those marks.

Shoot it and forget it.

Nats, just had a quick look with the help of a bore light...yup, dirty as hell but only metal dust and paticles...no mark or dent..whew!

Don't cleaning it yet...too busy working on the stock;)
 
Shoot it! Clean on a regular basis during the barrel break in period. take your time and you will be shooting MOA in no time.

Everyone has a different opinion on how to break a barrel in, some say dont bother at all. :rolleyes:

I have seen many rifles turn into great shooters with some time spent properly breaking them in and smoothing out the bore.

Actually they are button rifled, not cut, however they are certainly not lapped. :D

A few dozen bullets down the tube will take care of that, however. I will bet that it shoots just fine right from the start and only gets better. :cool:

Yeah thanks Ted... and your right again... I have a bad habit of referring to button pulled as cut barrels and they are definitely not the same:redface:
