Stevens "Crack Shot" Rifle No 16, Problem With The Rolling Block Action

I have a Stevens "Crack Shot" Rifle No 16 it has a rolling block action.
When the rolling block is closed and the part with the extractor and the firing pin just flops open.
In some pictures I have looked at the lever is opposite to this one.
Should there be something like a spring holding it in place?
Also should the extractor go back to the closed position after the spent cartridge has been ejected?

The extractor has to be lifted up to go in front of the rim of the next round.

I'm not seeing a manual on any of the regular sites. Not surprising given that your rifle is over 100 years old.

I think the lever is out 180 degrees... but I would not worry about how the rifle functions. It would be a wall hanger as far as I am concerned

Looks like you are missing the breechblock spring and plunger. This holds the block either open or closed, and affects the extractor position. Perhaps a previous owner 180'd the thumb lever in an unsuccessful attempt to "counter weight" the block.

If the barrel's rifling is decent these can still be a fun time plinker with some respect for the age of the rifle. To soften the blows to the action it's pretty common to shoot either standard velocity .22LR or something like shorts.

I've got a few of these old boy's rifles and they are simply way too much fun to relegate to the wall.
