I know guys say they're happy with the stevens 200 and for what it is, it is accurate and reliable.

Considering one in 300winmag. If you have one, how is the accuracy? Off a bench at 100yds with a cold barrel can you get consistant 1" or less groups if you do your part?

Recoil's not an issue. One of the reasons I'm considering the stevens is it's only 6.5lbs.

Anything else about your stevens 200 in 300 winmag you'd like to pass on?

Thank you for your reply.

I haven't one in .300Win Mag, but just two weekends ago I was able to group 3 shots within an inch out of my .308 rifle at 100 yards. That was just using a front sandbag and pressing on the butt with my left hand. My .223 Stevens can also shoot just as well with commercial ammo and a cheap Tasco scope, so if I'd be pretty confident about the potential of one chambered in .300Win Mag.

I suspect that I'd shoot better if these rifles came with a Savage Accutrigger, but they seem to work fine enough as is for most hunting applications.

I'm considering one, as it seems to be one of the only budget guns to come in .300 win mag, but I am thinking I might go with a Marlin XL7 in 30-06 instead.

Much nicer gun for the same money, but no .300 win mag. I don't think I'll be undergunned with the 06 though.

Incase you were wondering I have owned 2 Stevens 200's. 1 in .223, and the other in .270, and they both put up unbelievable groups, and not just for the money. I have also owned a Savage 10fcxp, and it did the same.

Don't hesitate if accuracy is your concern.

The weak points in comparison to something like a Marlin XL7, are the trigger, although you can adjust it down, and the crappy stock, which is ugly and flimsy.

My .02 cents.

I find the stock to be horribly uncomfortable. Even a 308 Stevens kicks my ass, so I would never consider a magnum without an aftermarket stock

My Stevens '06 will easily run 3/4" at 100 and some days (when I've got my crap together) I can get a hair under 1/2" at 100 yards. That's pretty damned good given the less than match-grade trigger. The stock doesn't bother me...sure it could be stiffer or prettier (not swirlier though) but a can of flat black rattle can took care of the ugly for me. As for results, well, my results are pretty damned good and I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up in 300WM for a banging around magnum (the reason I bought the '06 in the first place). It'll kick like a piebald pony, but if you're not concerned about it then fill your boots!

I'm not terribly afraid of recoil, but the thought of a Stevens with a plastic stock in .300 magnum makes my teeth hurt. I'll just stick to shooting my .375 Ultra from prone thanks.

If you bed the rifle, tweak the trigger, and load some quality ammo, there's no reason why it wouldn't shoot close to MOA, but out of the box I wouldn't bet on it.

I have a 243...my buds have 270's, 308's and 7MM Rem Mag all in Stevens 200's...ALLLLL shoot moa with factory ammo @ 100 yds with factory triggers. All 5 seem to show a preference for Win Super X ammo..??

..My 243 has a Rifle Basix trigger...new tactical handle an a fluted bolt body stuck it into a bedded Boyds Sky Laminate...pretty sharp unit. With handloads...one ragged hole @ 100 yds!!! The wifes laid claim to it now..:rolleyes:.she's hoping to get her deer this season with it!! ;) She got her first one ever last year....Now she's hooked!

Our main dealer here in the east coast has them on for 269.99

That is a ###y bolt. Whered you get it? $269 #### I might need another stevens :)

I have a 25-06 and love it. I've shot a stevens in 300mag. It kicks hard but the ugly stock fits me well even off a bench. It wasn't to bad. I prefer the savage 110 for the magnums tho. Better stock and drop box mag

I have owned two in 300 Win Mag. Both kicked like crazy off the bench, but shot close to MOA groups. Having said that, shooting at game the recoil was essentially unnoticed.

Now they are fairly manageable. A Limbsaver on one made a huge difference. A flip-flop pad is a pretty amazing in this regard, too............. for less than a dollar. :D

I've got a stock Stevens 200 in 300 win mag. With full power handloads it is very snappy, but it is stupid accurate, less than 3/4" at 100 yards. I put Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 with the QD manager ballistic reticle on it and it's like cheating to hit targets out to 600 yards with it. For a no-nonsense freezer filler, I think it would be about the ultimate choice. BTW, this is my first 300 win mag, and I was a little skeptical of getting good velocity with only a 24" bbl on a magnum, but pushing 180gr bullets over RL-17, I'm safely getting 3165 fps with it; and again, the thing is crazy accurate. I tried some other powders (4350, 4831), but found RL 17 gave me more velocity and less pressure signs than either of these. Accuracy with all three powders was basically lazerbeam tight groups.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys, my moose gun is a 7lb iron sights blr in 450 marlin using a 400gr lead at a little over 2000fps, and to be honest now everything else feels like a .22, haha.

I'm getting the stevens for a dedicated mountain rifle hunting sheep and elk. In my younger days I had an abolt medallion but in my rapidly advancing years a couple pounds less of my old legs will be welcome. Starting Jan. 1 it's off the booze and 'tater chips as to shed some of my personal middle age ballast.
Plus, with the crappy stock I won't feel bad if I rest it on a rock to shoot. Not to mention the attractive price leaves room in the budget for something else. ;)

Will take me awhile to get it all together but I'll post to let you know how I made out.
thanks again.

Well, took awhile, but I finally got it all together with a redfield 4-12 and some tall extension rings on #46 bases. (med rings, med ext rings and finally tall extension)

Happy to say, as described. After I sighted it in(look down the barrel, line it up, shoot, clean, overcorrect, repeat) I shot 3 - 3 shot groups. First 2 taking my time, 3rd one fast cycling. All were shot leaning on the hood of my 1/2 ton from 100 yds. All 3 the first two are either overlapping or touching, the 3rd shot is within 1", and I suspect mostly my fault. I then took a couple standing pokes at my 450yd target and hit it both times. Pretty hard to argue with that.

I really didn't find the recoil very noticeable as compared to other 300's. 'Leastwise my shoulders not sore after about 30 rounds. :)

Thanks to Kevin g for the tip. ;)
