Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a rimfire rifle for training and plinking purposes. I have an old Cooey Model 60 that doesnt extract, and the bolt handle falls off every now and then. I won't be getting rid of it, but I'm looking for something that I can actually shoot. I would also like it to be bolt action.

I don't have the biggest budget right now, and I've been looking into the Stevens Model 300.

Basically, I'd like some opinions on this rifle. Is it a total POS or will it be decent for training and plinking with reasonable accuracy?

Thanks,

Andy.

It's a Savage Mark II minus the accutrigger. Given that you can often find similarly basic Mark IIs at comparable prices, you should go and check a couple of them out in person and see if the trigger is to your liking.

My 300F, the 13.5" barrel has an 8 pound trigger. Little Black Moly should shave a few pounds off, and there is always the Sav-R adjustable sear around. The sights were way out from the factory and the foregrip is out of alignment - but its free floating.

I love mine, shoot it every chance I get. My suggestion would be get the Stevens if you want to tinker with it, or the Savage if you want it quickly set up and then left alone.

I love it. I bought it over the Savage Mark II because I was dead set against that accutrigger. I have no idea what the trigger pull on mine is, but I don't have a problem with it. I did find that the balance point is right about where the magazine well is, which leads to a rather contorted grip when carrying it afield. I spend 3 or 4 months looking for a 5 round magazine, which solves this problem. But maybe it's only a problem for me.

All that being said about the trigger though, about a year ago I bought a 93R17FVSS [17 HMR stainless/synthetic/bull barrel] with the accutrigger. Having owned one and shooting it quite a bit, a large part of me wishes that I had initially purchased an accutrigger-equipped MkII. The accutrigger is quite a fine setup indeed.

As has been said, I believe the prices are rather inline with each other, and to do it again, I'd get the accutrigger.

I've got a Mark II BTV and a 300F and I find I want to grip it right where the magazine sits too, so it's not just you. I was just chalking it up to having short arms though :D

I find my 300F's trigger to break cleanly, but it's much heavier than the Accutrigger. I don't know how much credit goes to the previous owner of the BTV though, as he did adjust the trigger on the gun.

Pick up a 5 round Savage mag, they fit the hand better. I shoot it either gripping the trigger guard or sit the guard and mag end on my hand. Does well with a bipod at 20 on the range too.

Also, my front post came way out, shot to the left, drove it to center with a punch.

The 5 round magazines are hard to find in my area however. I only have one at the moment, but I would like to pick up another one or two.

I see there's a bit of this "have to drift the front sight" going on. Mine was spot on out of the box. Maybe I got a Wednesday gun as opposed to a Monday or Friday gun.
