Hey guys I just picked up a stevens model 44 drop breach lever in 25-20 ss.Barrel is part octagon and round, good bore, original sights, even the case coloured receiver looks great.it has a 5 diget serial number.Anyone else have one or can tell me more about them. Can it be rechambered to 25-35 or rebarreled to another cal.I would love to shoot deer with this rifle.Ihave just the spot, max 35 yard shot, took 3 deer opening morning with a 44 ruger last year.Back to the rifle how can you tell how old it is patent date says 94,what would the value be for such a rifle,Local shop has Redding dies and brass for the 25-20 ss but its over $200 for dies and 40 new brass.:wave::wave:
Thanks for any help.

Made from about 1890- 1947, and generally were a fine lower cost target rifle. It cannot be considered a strong action -- even the 22 Hornet loosened them when Stevens tried that chambering in the 1930s.
According to Frank deHass, pressures should not exceed 30,000 lbs and 25-35 would not be a good choice. His suggestion was along the likes of 22rf, 25-20, 32-20 and 38 Special.
If I was in your shoes I might consider the option to mention for dies and brass . At $200 you would be able to shoot a fine classic and save on gunsmithing charges involved in any conversion. Sounds like a nice rifle.

I agree. Get the reloading gear and use the rifle as is. Not much more expensive than rechambering. A 44 1/2 is strong, a 44 isn't.
I have one in .22LR, and it is a fine shooting rifle. Stevens made good barrels.

you got to be sure its .25-20 single shot its a little different then .25-20 WCF

I have a 44 Stevens in .32 Ideal.
They seem like a nice gun to me, granted, I won't be going after Cape buffalo with it.

Well I bought the 25-20 SS redding dies and brass cases,They are marked 25-20 JI,also picked up some 60 flat point Hornadys and 86 gr spoints. Will load some up and try it this Sunday afternoon.will try and post a pic of the rifle and let everyone know how much I loved shooting it.

I had one of those. A neat little rifle and cartridge to be sure. Some of the Jamison brass should still be available for it. Check with Jerry at Mystic Precision, he brought in Jamison brass for me once. Bertram also makes the brass but I've found their stuff to be hit and miss.

The Bullet Barn will sell 25 cal cast bullets.

If you want to learn more about the rifle check out the ASSRA web site. Lots of Stevens single shot guys there.

Chris.
