I have a Stevens 87D that isn't cycling properly. When I chamber a round manually it fires and feeds a new round but won't fire the second round, the firing pin strikes the cartridge but not hard enough. I've cleaned it and the bolt seats properly but appears to hangup a fraction of an inch short to fire the second round. If I push on the bolt before I fire it works. Any suggestions?

I had the same gun. It was reliable in the few hundred rounds I shot it, all high velocity bulk winchester. I remember it did have a stiff recoil spring. If your ammo does not have sufficient "power", it may not push the bolt back enough to give the spring sufficient forward force to fully push the bolt forward.

Perhaps a change of ammo to a high-velocity 38 or 40 grain head might help.

I have the Stevens 87D also. I only use Winchester 333/555 ammo and never had a hiccup of any kind with the gun Old Clackity Clack is very accurate too. Love to take it gopher shooting as with the longer barrel, it gives about the same reach as my Marlin 81s. Your problem may be the ammo or the bolt needs to be cleaned out inside. The firing pin may be worn short or the slot it slides in is dirty and holding it back with the residue from the shell fired. Some ammo is terrible for residue.

I had a feeding issue with my 87C.
It turned out that I had overtightend the takedown screw and it pressed up against the mag tube .
A thick rubber washer cured that prob.
Overlubeing can cause problems too.
