Anyone have a Stevens rifle ,what kind of quality out of box as far as group size is concerned can be expected .Thinking of picking one up as price is cheap and at later date swap barrels for one that is match grade and other work.

That is exactly what im in to now, i bought a stevens 200 in .223. out of the bow , tha accuracy was great. no problem out to 250 yards. im in the process of putting a 24" match grade bull barrel, larger bolt handle and laminated wood stock. stevens are a great inexpensive rifle, id have another in a heart beat. hope this helps

For $300 they don't get better. I find the stocks are very poor quality but thats it. A stock can be changed out easy enough if you don't like it. And it for want a good shooter and barrel swap and probably a trigger swap is cheap and easy.

I have owned five of them, and they were all very good shooters. If not MOA, they were right next to being that. The 223s were all sub MOA rifles.

They don't look too bad once the stocks are painted, either.

These $350 rifles shoot as well as the majority of factory rifles costing 5 times as much. Add a Shilen drop-in barrel to this and for under a grand, you probably have a rifle that will STILL shoot as good or better than factory semi-customs costing 5 times what you spent for the gun and its upgrade. Spend some additional money on a proper stock with proper bedding, and you have a full-on precision rifle.

They are not a precision rifle out of the box, but they make a very good start to creating one.

Out of the box, mueller scope, 300wm, usually groups .75-.90 at 100y with loads it likes. I've done nothing, except replace the hockey puck recoil pad with a Limbsaver, and dump 5 pounds of bullets into the hollow of the stock to make it gentler for load developing, now that I'm done with that, out comes the lead

NICE. Do you know what kinda money you put into that Stevens striker? Do you have any range reports?

I'm guessing around $1500 including glass (not sure how much the chassis would cost yet as I made it over several months a little bit at a time)

A parts list and range report would be nice.;)

- Stevens 200 .308 donor action
- 26" Pac-Nor 1:8 polygonal .260 Rem heavy varmint contour
- AICS 1.5 OD skins
- Spartan Precision custom 6061 chassis
- Spartan Precision custom 20 MOA extended rail
- AICS 10 round mags
- Falcon Menace 4.5-18
- Spartan/ATRS Tac bolt knob
- Sharp Shooter Supply competition trigger
- Sharp Shooter Supply extended bolt handle (turned down for bolt knob)

As for the range report, I just started load development but she was shooting minute of Herman the German's face at 200m the last time I was out at the CSRA range.
I'll keep you guys posted once I actually get some more trigger time, we've been too busy making AR15 lowers these days to put many rounds downrange :ninja:

Cheers,

Rich

You realize we are going to need details and pricing.

Are the stock skins readily available? costs?

Fun, fun, fun...

Jerry

Hey Jerry, you realize this is mostly your fault, if I hadn't picked your brain about that long range rig of yours....

I've got to take a good hard look at pricing vs costs for the chassis to see if it's worth making more of them, of course i had to go and make one for a Savage/Stevens so I've got at least 2 more variations to come up with if it does happen....

The skins weren't too hard to get from the U.S., though that was 6 months ago so who knows what it'd be like now. If i had it to do again I'd buy the 1.0 version now that I know what they mill off of it to make a 1.5.
