So someone I work with had a death in the family, and was "stuck" with having to sell off some firearms. I asked how much she was looking to get for them, and had her send me what she knew about them.

There was a Stevens model 58 12 guage, a Stevens pump action 12 guage (she didnt know of a model number) and an old Lee Enfield 303. She didnt know if they were in good condition or if they had even been maintained at all, all she knew was the last time they were fired was over 10 years ago.... so I offered $200 for all three. (which she said no to)

That sound unreasonable to anyone here? I was basing the price off what I saw on gunbroker . com for them, and not knowing the condition of them. I told her if she thought she could get a lot more for it (which she seems to think), she should put it on consignment somewhere, and see what she'll actually get.

By not knowing the condition, which is everything in firearm evaluation, $200.00, may have been too much. You don't really know, but it doesn't sound like she has to or really wants to get rid of them. If she's not a gunnut, one would think she would want the $200.00 for something that she doesn't use or want. Who knows.

ya, I figure she is thinking they are worth more than they actually are, due to sentimental reasons. Its no big loss on my side of things though, I'd rather get one brand new, or used from someone I know looked after it :)

If she happens to come back to me and say she'll take it, then I'll buy them still.... I offered to buy any ammo she had as well, but she didnt know how much there was

I had a similar situation... your right, there's always the sentimental factor if their from someone close, or they think you are trying to rip them off. My second experience was at an estate sale believe it or not... the wife went for a look, so I tagged along. in the basement was a bunch of camping stuff, so i asked the son if dad hunted. He said yes, but no one else in the family hunted. Naturally, I asked if he had any guns he wanted to get rid of. Long story short, I walked out with 8 guns, paid 500.00 for everything, sold 6 of them for 1100.00, and had 2 free keepers. Pays to listen to the wife. Sometimes.
