The gun I have is marked Apr 30/07. I have it completely disassembled and I have soaked the firing pin for a week now and it won`t come out. It moves about 1/8" out and thats it and back to seated position. Anyone have one out before? It was rusty prior to soaking it. Right at the moment I have it soaking in Seafoam Deep Creep. Thanks,Darcy

If the pin is moving, there must be something that it preventing it from coming all the way out. Is there a retaining pin?

Theres gotta be a retaining pin ( cross pin ) keeping it in. If thats removed, then it must be a chunk of rust or something preventing it from pushing out.

Thats what I'm thinking as well, sometimes a tiny pin holding parts in place can be almost invisible to see, you have to look very close.

You can soak the rifle in anything you want and never get the firing pin out.
Found a decent manual with disassembly instructions(sometimes more important than you'd think. Sometimes one part must come out first to get other parts out correctly.) and a good exploded drawing(usual places have a really crappy drawing that isn't a proper exploded drawing.). It shows the carrier pin, wee, tiny, small thing that it is, holds the firing pin in.
No W's. cornellpubs.com/downloads/stevens-vl.pdf

As it happens I've got one in functional order. Now there are also two versions of the breech block so this may not be your answer. On mine the firing pin and the cartridge lifter appear to be held in by a cross pin at the lower rear portion of the breechblock. It looks like the pin is returned to the retracted position by the lifter. So if you have not removed the lifter then you won't be able to remove the firing pin. The pin on mine isn't smoothed into the block. It's very apparent.

On mine dry firing has badly peened the lower edge of the chamber. If yours was dry fired a lot and the FP isn't all that hard it may well have peened over the end of the pin and that is preventing it from coming out towards the rear. If that's the case when you push it back from the breech end it should feel like it wedges or sticks a little. If you can push it forward and use a Dremel cut off wheel to LIGHTLY trim the end it may then come out more easily. This assumes you have already removed the lifter.

EDIt- I typed that out before I realized that sunray had included a link to that great manual (THANKS SUNRAY!) On the diagram the parts I'm talking about are the carrier(38), the carrier pin(40) and the firing pin(39). In the diagram you can see the finger on the carrier and the notch in the FP that it fits into. So you need to remove the carrier pin and carrier to allow the FP to come out towards the rear.

BTW, when it comes time to put it all together keep in mind if you don't already know this that you don't just screw the parts onto the magazine tube and breech block unit all tight. The action lock and sleeve need to be positioned along the threaded portion just right which sets the amount of carrier lift. Otherwise it won't lift the new cartridge to the right height and you'll find it lives up to the nickname of "impossible loader" all too easily.... :d

Thanks guys! I finally got the firing pin. My guess is: It broke at one time and was left to the rust gods ever since. I soaked it in Seafoam Deep Creep and with a little help...it came out. Now I am trying to locate one.
