Could have had a 458?:p

The 450 makes more sense in a lever action IMHO.

Looked into buying one of these a while back. Pretty spendy, if I remember correctly around $2100. I thought it was over priced for what it is.

True, but the end result is that in function you still have nothing more than a (slightly faster) 45/70....So why not have a 45/70 and the advantages of a lever action?

You wont elevate trajectory enough to gain usable yardage so no real world difference is made....More to the point.

Nice rifle, but not 3 standard rifles worth.....Maybe in a more functional caliber?

big bore

I am not searching for speed has I rarely shoot over 1200 fps
I am a cast bullet shooter and have about 20 or so different casting moulds
the marlin is nice yes but limited to short blunt nose
all the game I have shot with my ruger no 1 in 4570 (deer moose bear and wild bore) where under 150 yards
will be putting a nightforce 2.5-10x32 on this rifle with a NPR-2 reticle which able me to dial in for very precise shot
last moose 175 yards away shot in the forehead
and last I just love the rifle
bolt action
very durable finish (Manox)
good adjustable rear and front sights
good stock
and I like bolt action

here is a picture of my ruger mounted with a scout scope (burris 2-7x32) with balistic plex......
by the way the moose was shot with this rifle with a 575 gr bullet
thanks for all the input

I like the way you set up your #1!

Franky the new Styer rifles leave me cold. When I was considering an expensive .458, I was going to base it on a Brno 602 and simply open up a .375 Ultra to .458" This would have given me the velocity I wanted without having to endure the cost of .460 Weatherby brass.

Likie others, I also think a short .458 is at it's best in a lever action. A lever action is nicer to carry, and quicker to get into action that are the modern bolt guns. Seeing as how you want to shoot cast exclusively, I would think that a barrel with Ballard rifling might also be a consideration over a button rifled barrel. Full powered .458 Winchester is still slow enough to live on a diet of cast bullets. For that matter, so is the .458 Lott if you shoot heavy for caliber bullets.

Despite my preference for bottle neck rifle cartridges, for your needs the .450 Marlin/Styer fills the nich you describe. Good luck with your project.

I think the CZ 550 with kevlar stock in 458 is pretty nice but my friend has a regular 550 with wood stock in 458
problem with feeding which he fixed
and recently a crack stock, still talking the cz for a replacement stock
and for me the rifle with scope is in the 12 pounds to heavy compared to the steyr....

Nice!

I am running a few Nightforce scopes on my long range hunting rifles...Very nice.

Though it might seem odd to some the ability to adjust for trajectory is crucial for a slow girl like the 45/70. Good to see someone is paying attention.

Why don't you just re-barrel your Ruger to something like 45/90 (Starline made the brass last time I looked) or 45/110 or even 45/120 Sharps??

I have an FN Mauser rebarrelled to .458 x 2 inch American, that I purchased secondhand for a quarter of the price of the Steyr.
Has a 1 in 16 twist, and with it's straighter stock, the recoil is much more manageable than any levergun. One has more lattitude for overall length, and it is very strong.
I have downstairs a 545 grain Lyman mould with a big flat meplat, as well as a 405 grain PB mould too.
Using H&H based casings, I can convert other magnum calibres to my needs.
Recently a non-reloader magnum shooter, rather nicely left me 39 .300 Win Magnum empty casings to convert over to .458 x 2 inch, at the local rifle range.
I'll never be starved of brass with this wildcat chambered rifle........

yes x-fan
my 575 gr. bullet at 200 yards has
35.7 inches drop
the rifle is will be mounted with a NEAR 10 moa picatinny rail
beleive me in my present 4570 this bullet does not loose to much velocity at 200 yards and kill game very effectively
so when hunting I alway have my range finder in hand ...
haven't loss one yet

I know what you mean I have a 30-06, brass no problem
but for the 450 marlin will by 500 cases and at this low loading (1100fps) the will last very long
have this in my 4570 since nealy 7 years and the case are like knew

I once thought about shelling out for a Steyr in .450 Marlin, but then I realized that it would be less expensive to buy a Savage in a WSM calibre, buy a new match-grade barrel in .450 marlin for it, and install it myself. The bolt face and magazine would work perfectly, and the whole thing would still be half as expensive, with a brand new WSM barrel that you could then sell on the EE to recoup some dough. My thoughts, anyway.

Erik.

That sounds like a pretty nice rifle; much more so than the Steyr. Have you got any pictures?

I can't understand why Marlin and Hornady came up with the .450 Marlin rather than simply making rifles and factory ammo in .458x2".

took the plunge

well guys today I ordered my Steyr pro hunter big bore in 450 marlin.
will take 60 to 90 day before delivery
on its arrival will report with pics

Presently no pictures, but I'll try to change that if I can, in the next few days Tjaile.

Edit: No-one would make this as a factory standard item.
Probably because 7mm Remington Magnum or EDIT: 6.5 Remington Magnum can fit and fire (!) IF god forbid, some-one accidently chambered and fired these rounds, in the .458 x 2 inch rifle.

Cheers.......

Come to think of it, maybe Hornady wanted to ensure that they would be the sole source of brass/ammo by designing a case that was not based on any other one.
