Has anyone here had the opportunity to shoot one? I cannot even find an review on the internet anywhere. I would like to buy a .50cal one of these days, but don't want to go custom if I don't have to.

 :sniper:

If you're going to shoot a 50cal, at $10-$15 a round, you want something accurate unless, like a lot of people, you just want to look at it. So many of the retailers want to sell you the gun but before you buy, ask them if they can supply ammo. If they can't you know who just wants to take your money. Ask them what scope they'd recommend and more inportantly, what choice of rings they're going to put on the gun. There's a good chance, they can't supply that either because they don't know anything about the gun and JUST WANT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY.

How much ammo were they able to sell you? They're the first retailer I've heard of that has had any ammo of any quantity.

Ammo is available if you know who to ask, as well as reloading equipment. It's not cheap, but you can do it for less than $10/round. My question was, has anyone shot one and can comment on the quality and capability of the rifle.

I really like mine. Shoots great. Took a deer at over 700m a few years ago. I have never had any problems with accuracy. The other thing I like is it breaks into 2 pieces for transport.

just my 2 cents...

Steyer

I shoot one of the Prarie gun works 50's, It's absolutely fantastic and one of the most accurate rifles I own with the right load. My buddy two summers ago got tired of asking can I try it and decided to buy his own 50 cal. He bought the Steyer HS 50 I can email you a pic of the two of them together if you like.
The Steyer has an easier trigger with some take up, mine is heavier with almost none, The Steyer has a bigger more effecient Muzzel brake mine is smaller and doesn't blow a blast of air/dust/ debris up your nose each time.
My muzzle brake send the blast more sideways while the Steyer sends it back into your face, my buddy wears goggles while shooting not just glasses (looks kinda silly actually)
With mine i've put 6 rounds in the same hole from 100M best I could do with Johns is 3-5 rds inside a 2.5 " circle. For an extra 1000-1500 John could have had one like mine.
Johns does break down nicely and has a good hard case for his while mine only has the stock unscrew leaving it looking like the worlds nastiest pistol and then goes in a drag bag.

If i had to buy another 50 cal i'd buy another Prarie gun works,,,,, actually John says that too.

I did load developement for a guy who bought a brand new Steyr 50 and while shooting it with A-Max 750gr bullets, I got a wierd vibration in the joint of my shoulder. The recoil was F/A but the muzzle blast was abusive to say the least. I balaklavad up covering my non-shooting eye and most of my face. We had to use crazy high rings to get the scope high enough off the gun to get behind it. We ended up intigrating a mercury supressor into the rear of the stock to rid us of the strange vibration. The action worked well to extract the spent rounds. If I had to pick an action to biuld on, it would probably be a first an ATR custom 50 in a techno stock or secondly a Ferret 50 just because it works well and I like the concept of using an AR lower.

Yeah, i shot one in spring at the Steyr Mannlicher shooting facility in Wiener Neustadt, Austria and i was very impressed with its performance.5 Shot group at 300m was 1.9" with factory ammo.Great gun, but i don't know, whether i like the way she looks.

Notice a sudden availabitlity of these Steyr...Did the US soldiers seized them all in Iraq from Iran?? :)

All those reports turned out to be false. It was British reporters that said U.S. forces had found Irainian Steyr .50's in Iraq. The U.S. forces denied it, but the story went everywhere regardless. Typical ####ty reporting, that caused Steyr alot of headaches.

If you have a hankering to touch one. Epps has one on the rack:runaway: (maybe more?) When I saw it there, I could not stop smiling. It looked so out of place next to the rack of .22's. Man it's a big gun....28lbs!! And that muzzle break, you could put a 2 litre bottle on it.

The reason they are showing up now is because these are the only ones you can get. Nothing in .50 will ever come out of the USofA.
These are imported from Austria. They took awhile to get here.

I like my Steyr...I have a Barett now so I will probably be a little less in love with it but it is a fine fine rifle
