Steyr AUG Question

Wow, an armed assault on an armored car with AUGs, I had no idea something like that ever occurred in Canada. That's pretty damn cool. Did Al Pacino try to stop them with an FNC?

I think the reason there are so few registered is the effort put out by the firearms control people in hunting down every one sold by a dealer, immediately after they became prohib. They actually came looking for AUGS to seize (at least in BC).

The gun itself was accurate enough, but the maintaining consistent point of aim with the optic itself was difficult due to the reticle's lack of a center dot.

I found that maintaining a consistent point of aim came with practice. Though the reticle on out ones was different. It looked like this

A man (assume 1.8m tall) fitted into the inner dark circle at 300m

Actually, it was prohibited un the CONSERVATIVE Bill C17 .... Just so the record is clear .... The Libs ban with grandfathering, the Conservatives, don't. They just seize everything without compensation.

No. It was prohibited under Bill C-68 before the events in question. It was introduced in 1995 IIRC. That also puts timelines as the same year I was out of the military.

You can hopefully get a historical context as the bill being introduced just shortly after the Rwanda events.

Had it not been listed in a registry, they would likely never have been executing a warrant at my door, and I'd be at least one more bizarre tale short.

I see lots of them when I go to Malaysia, the issue ones over there are getting old though. A friend of mine bought about 50,000 and is using them as part kits to supply the US.
Yeah. That's because the UN bought them AUG. After they brought their shot out M16 with them on peace keeping mission in the Balklans.

Yep, they did ... I can tell you about the story of the dad of a friend of mine, whom had just bought a 10K .50 cal rifle. He got to shoot it ONCE with a then buddy of his, the local police chief. Said police chief knocked on his door one day saying "hand it over" ... I was told the story first hand, saw what was to me an immense scope just laying around in the stairway the next week when I came over for the night (as was customary for me at the time) his son was the best excuse for a friend I had ever had .... I wonder where he is today as they saved my life a couple of years later, during the ice storm of 98 ... If you or anyone of your family are a member of this board Philippe, PM me will ya ! I owe ya'll big time !

Also saw the pile of brass in the basement that he had acquired after buying the beast .... All for nothing ....

For those of you who wonder why I don't trust Conservatives .... There's your answer .... Actual, Factual core values take care of the rest.

With no compensation hey? And owners just sit back and take it?

When Darnell Bass' armed car robbery in Calgary was being investigated, several factors initially led investigators to my home.

  • The firearm was examined by EPS and later returned; removing both it and me as suspects from the case.
  • In the balance of things, they were quite polite throughout considering all things.

It was, in my opinion, another testament to the Edmonton Police Service's professional bearing while following logical seeming but far reaching leads. It IS nonetheless a chilling example of how registration of rare property can easily make you the suspect of a crime investigation.

In the aftermath an investigator confirmed that very small numbers (less than 50) and ties to the Airborne led them to my doorstep.

No confirmation was ever made in regards to whether the AUG used during the robbery was registered or not. A buddy of mine that served in 3-Cdo ran into Darnell in Calgary last year, but its not a typical goal to bring up negative bulls**t over coffee with a casual acquaintance that properly belongs in a guy's past.

My .02c on part of the history of the AUG-SA in Canada.
I heard he is lock smith now in Calgary.

To allow anyone to come and seize something without compensation just because of a change in the "law" is no different then theft. I can't see myself just letting that happen.

how you going to fight it? especially if there are only a few owners of that particular model banned, not enough for a media storm.

if ya did anything stupid, they'd take everything else. thats why they dont take them all at once, its a carrot on a stick.

I hear you on the trust thing, Rob. I think everyone who was around for that was affected by it. I know I had a lot of 'friends' who were in law enforcement at the time, I don't think I spoke to them after that. Anyone who figures they'll "deal with" a situation like that hasn't been there, it's polite, it's efficient, and it's totally immoral. Regardless of what you think, you will comply - you won't have any option.
