Steyr "AUG" Status

Somebody know if before 1990 a Steyr AUG rifle with a 20 in. barrel, and, overall lenght 31.5 in. was a restricted or non restricted gun.

Me, I think that gun was a gun without any restriction before the new law, but, CFC tell me this gun was always restricted in Canada.

Now, with a very futurist look, and, with is black and green color, it's a prohibited 12(4) gun.

I have had mine since 1985.

It was never restricted. Only the FNFAL was restricted for a long time

before that.

Specifically, the AUG was "Non-restricted" with the 20" barrel. As I recall it went from that status to Prohib (With grandfathering) in one day! I Don't remember it going restricted first.

I may be wrong, but wasn't there both a 16 inch and 20 inch model on the market? If so, the 16 inch would have still been restricted as a semi with less than 18.5 inches of barrel.

Actually it went from non restricted to totally prohibited (a mad rush on he part of the CPFO's office to try to confiscate them all) to prohibited with grandfathering if memory serves correctly.

12(4) guns are grandfathered...not sure why you think they aren't

No more firearms can be added to existing lists. Would have to be a new list, but if the libs get in they would most likely just start rounding them up for destruction.

The Steyr AUG rifle, and any variant or modified version of it has been prohibited since 1 Oct '92 by name. Definitely a 12(4). Number two on the 'evil' list.
Prior to that it was just an expensive rifle. If it makes you feel any better, a used one runs $3200US and up, Stateside. A Class 3(FA) 16" .223 AUG is cheaper at 2 grand USD plus the $200 tax.

While the brochure convieniently doesn't mention the Steyr AUG, and there are clearly a few obvious changes to the design, I have little faith that the RCMP wouls see this as anything but a derivative of that design.

Classified as "Prohibited"... we submitted this to RCMP when they first came out and Ottawa ruled the MSAR as a Variant of the AUG.
