I have a new Steyr Classic 'Mountain' ( 508mm barrel length ) in 7mm-08 and would like to know what the barrel twist rate is. I am assuming the 140gr bullet is the best for that caliber but knowing the twist would help decide where to start with the reloads, no?

Thanks,
Jim W.

I don't know what they use now but my 7mm RM in a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus shoots 140, 130, 160 and 175 grain bullets well.

Jim, take a piece of tape about two inches long and fold it in half over your cleaning rod so it acts as a flag, put a brush on the end of your rod and push it into the chamber until you feel resitance, measure the distance of the flag (near the handle) from any fixed part on rifle and start to push, when the flag makes one full rotation measure agian, if the rod moved 10 inches you have 1 in 10 twist 12 inches 1 in 12 inch twist etc.

Now that is a great example of the KISS ( keep it simple stupid...) system! A nice simple solution, brilliant in its simplicity...my usual thought is, why didn't I think of that! The answer usually is, I wasn't thinking

Thank you David,

Turns out the rate is 1 in 9 for my rifle, so I guess medium to medium heavy bullets would be a good place to start.

In 7mm-08 I suspect that would translate to the 140 to 165 grain group of bullets...
But I guess the next step is to reload a few of each and get my butt to the range!
