Steyr M-40 pistol

So a friend picked up a new Steyr-Mannlicher M series pistol in 40 S&W. Took it to the range yesterday and fired maybe 80 rounds, 50 Rem UMC and 30 WinClean.

The pistol felt somewhere between a Glock 17 and M&P, and functions much the same.

We had 2 jams, 1 each - the magazine was very hard to remove while jammed.

The trigger was horrible, it is supposed to be 5.5 lbs but it appeared a lot heavier then that. The trigger was also "creepy" with at least 2 distinct stages before reaching firing position. Trigger needs adjustment and attention with a hard stone.

As for accuracy, the gun shot well (as well as be expected with the trigger) and produced fairly consistent groups. The sights are delta / trapezoid style and I found them very easy to use - much more accurate (for me) then the square / box style on other pistols.

The gun was on sale and cheaper then it's competitors, and appears to be a simple, functional gun. I just think it needs some work with a fine file and a stone.

On the Steyr M one learns quickly to use the short trigger reset for firing. Other than the trigger I have found my M9-A1 to be very reliable and fun to shoot.

I handled one a few days ago. Though less ergonomic than my super-comfy P99, it's more impressive than a Glock and the trapezoidal sights are excellent IMO.

Dar, could you explain?? As it is not my gun and only had a limited opportunity to shoot it, I thought it felt a lot heavier on the first round after putting in a new clip; like it was double action "plus". As far as I could tell it was DA only? If not, then holy crap, the trigger is 10 times worse than I thought.

After you pull the trigger do not let it go all the way forward again. It can move a few mm and then it feels like a "click", then you can pull the trigger again and viola! no creep. I think the nominal trigger pull is 7.5lb on the Steyr...

It's a DAO, the trigger is supposed to be consistant but wasn't on the one I had; sometimes nice and light sometimes not so much....Got M&P now and like it better, but Steyr did have some advantages...
