So, with the Steyr M finally returning to the US market, I figure now would be a good time to ask: Would YOU buy a restricted Steyr M?

It's only a few mm short. If there are enough potential customers, we may be able to convince them to do a run or two.

Returning to the US market? What's the story there... I do seem to remember talk of Steyr USA shutting down.

Is there are new revision of the Steyr M?

If support was ok in Canada (like the ability to buy mags that don't cost $100 each) I might consider... however, since you are going through the hassle, why not ask for the STEYR S-A1 with 106mm threaded (or not) barrel ;)
That would get me very interested.

No they are not shutting down, They start to export pistol the the State again at a "lower price", details can visit steyrclub.com. I love their gun but just don't want to buy a gun but can't get the parts easily.

The last go-round for the Steyr M pistol in North America, they made Canada legal M9-A1's for the Canadian market. The 9mm is a 4 inch (102mm) barrel like the GLOCK 19/23. The .40S&W model, M40-A1 was a bit bigger if I remember correctly (or maybe I am thinking of the P99 in 9mm vs. P99 in .40). If they are coming out with another version, they will no doubt make them available to the Canadian market. Unlike some of the big boys that do not make changes for puny anti-gun environments like Canada - I think Steyr needs to get every sale they can.

In any event, there were lots of 9mm and .40S&W Steyr M pistols imported to Canada of the last two generations of it. (First generation has that weird proprietary rail with the slots in it, and the gun was sort of blue/black. Second generation was sort of gray and had a more normal rail).

I used to have one. I wanted to love it, but I actually grew to hate it. It has some neat features but, but the gun it tries to improve upon (the GLOCK 19/23), it falls very, very short of.

I like Steyr. I have one Steyr firearm currently and I've had several in the past. I like their rifles better than their pistols. There is something "off" with that M-series pistol though. There are some reasons why it never caught on or made even a ripple in the sales department compared to its competitors (GLOCK, XD, M&P, etc.)

There are quite a few site supporter have them for sale, I think Badger arm has very good price at this moment, the barrel is 106mm and is perfectly legal here in Canada.

The Steyr M Series pistols are one of the best pistols for ergonomics. It has a very compfortable grip and the bore axis is very low to the web of your hand. As a result, there is much less muzzle "flip" since the recoil seems to push straight back.

The triangular sighting system works great for my eyes. It took a little getting use to, but once you get the hang of it, they work great. I find the traingular sights cover less of your target allowing better aiming.

Steyr was slow getting out the design and Glock beat them to the market. It now is a difficult market to crack because Glock has become entrenched.

Given a choice between Glock and a Steyr, I would choose the Steyr. It has been well thought out out and is a good design. Austrian made, so the build quality is comparable to Glock.

This topic can be just like guys discussing "who makes the best pick-up truck?" Everybody has a favorite. You must find what works for you.

Cheers !
