Wow is this a beautiful little gun. The trapezoidal sights are truly unique but once you get used to them they are super functional and really speed up target aquisition. The most impressive thing about it is how naturally it points to the target. There is no need to flex or extend the wrist, once you have a proper grip, probably the most ergonomically correct pistol I have ever held. An improved Glock? by a long shot. Why are these not more popular?? If you can find one buy one, my recommendation for the day.

I used to have one. The polymer quality was excellent, but the slide finish wasn't that great and I suspect not very durable. Removable rails and trigger group is a good idea IMO.

The grip is good, low bore axis pretty much eliminated the flip but I thought it kinda forced my trigger finger down too much.

I ended up selling it because it refused to shot my reloads. Jammed 2-5 times a box. :S Never figured out why...worked fine with factory tho...

I used to have one and I sold it. I could never really get used to the sights. The gun, in my view also has some reliability issues with it's super tight chamber and the overall tightness of the fit and finish.

I like the Steyr in some ways, and I sort of "wanted" to love it, but it just isn't quite there in my book. I tend to go for the underdog in life, but there are some really good reasons why GLOCK sells hundreds of thousands of pistols all around the world, whereas the Steyr M and S series pistols are relatively unknown.

I used to have the Steyr GB as well, and I sold that as well. I generally regret parting with the GB, but the M9A1, I must say I don't miss it.

Of all the guns I have bought and sold, the two real standouts are GLOCK and SIG. For me that has primarily been the GLOCK 19 and the SIG 229 (but also the 228 and 239) - but really any GLOCK or classic SIG is a good bet. Right now I am bigger on the GLOCK because I have been moving more toward short trigger reset, but SIGs can be had with the SRT now (I have one of them with that trigger).

There have been some long debates about the trapazoid sights on this forum. All I can tell you is that they were really hard to get used to for me, and in fact I never did get used to them. I wish I had the chance to try the Steyr with normal 3-dot sights, but I never did. I was trying to order some 3-dot night sights for it from the U.S. but had difficulty with that, so I just sold it.

If you are into collecting different guns, or trying different things, by all means get a Steyr M9A1, M40A1 - but if you want a workhorse gun for shooting (of the duty pistol type) get a GLOCK 17/19 or a SIG 226/229 - preferably with SRT (although you can get used to the SIG trigger if you don't switch back and forth with short reset guns too much). That is my recommendation.

thanks for the comments fella's. i have a stable full of sig's, had the glock 17 and couldn't sell it fast enough. it was reliable and accurate and ate anything I fed it but just didn't like the feel in my hands. am a die hard sig fan but honestly the m9-a1 points better, better even than the p228 which really surprised me. Reading many reviews, they do have issues with reloads, not sure why, but don't reload so its not an issue with me. I really don't mind finding what works for the particular gun and sticking with it.

Be careful buying Orphan guns, no longer manufactured. Parts availability may be an issue.

Before I buy a firearm, I always check to see if spare parts are available.

gundoggy, good advice but the risk isn't all that high. I don't mind throwing away a few hundred dollars after I've had my fun. Heck tickets to one hockey game can cost that much.

Not sure where the idea if the M9 being an orphan or not being made anymore is coming from, this gun is still being manufactured and Steyr seems to be moving along with this gun very well. From what I have read before I bought mine, Steyr is just changing their marketing scheme in the states a little.
If you do some reading there are a lot of people impressed with this gun. A lot of positive talk on Glock talk and other forums.
I love mine.

The only thing I didn't like about the Steyr I handled was the sights, it shot very nicely, all the rounds nicely grouped, low recoil, good ergonomics, no misfires. But those sights, I read that Wayne Novak had looked at the Steyr's sights and simply said "which genius invented those?" I'm afraid I have to agree.

This gun is the gun which change my view of plastic gun, I handled one, compare with my G17, it just feel so great, solid, well made and well designed, all I can say it is a gun that attention to details. The draw back is parts supply here is a problem. If the after sale back up is not an issue, this gun is the gun that I want to buy and keep for ever.

Oh My, what a surprise, this gun is wonderful. I have never held a pistol that points so naturally to the target and the trapezoidal sights really make follow up shots easy and fast. Because of how it sits in your grip the sights line up to the target, other pistols need the muzzle adjusted up or down a bit to line up perfectly which means you have to flex or extend your wrist a bit to be on target, this minor adjustment gets mucked up when you fire a shot and the muzzle flips, not so with the steyr M9 it immediately returns to the point of aim with your wrist returning back to its natural anatomic state, its AMAZING. i have never shot a pistol that does this, not one. I won't argue the pros and cons of the pistol ie trigger, feel, balance, recoil, fit and finish as that is not what struck me about the gun. I can't help but think that with this gun you could litterally goup well with your eyes closed, its that impressive. Hope others can try it with that in mind and post their thoughts. I am a die hard sig fan and love other types of guns but really have to say I am very impressed with this Steyr, very impressed.

Someone suggested adjustments that can be made to improve the gun. This is one gun I won't mess with and will adjust to it rather than adjust it to me.

Who ever said the M9A1 was underrated? Steyr's M9A1 has received a lot of critical success. Consumers who have tried them all have good things to say and consumer reviews are positive all over the internet too. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's the best thing since a Glock and I prefer it over the hinged trigger on the S&W M&P but this pistol certainly is no diamond in the rough. It's received the attention it deserves but ultimately it's just not it.

There is no pistol that is a diamond in the rough. the sig p210 most accurate...bad hammer bite, glock...durable...lousy feel, sig great feel....heavy and need big hands, colt python.....super smooth action but a wheel gun. every gun has its pros and cons but this one is truly ergonomic which in a gun battle would give the user a HUGE edge over most other pistols on the market, thats the value in this piece and when the chips are down, it may be the most valuable asset of any gun.

Yea, I could really use ergonomics, one of them little dispensers for my face cream too, and don't forget a spot to hide my tampons!! A girl can't be caught without a tampon. ..Like what the f**k dude? Last time I checked all I need is something that points straight and goes bang for a CQ shootout. Wheelgun, bottom feeder or otherwise. Otherwise, I'll grab the AR or Carbine.

Wait, it doesn't even need to shoot straight, this shooting position has been working on the streets of Vancouver for some time, promoting the highest rate of gun violence: :shotgun: "Yea, turn that s**t on it's side, glock gone topsy turvy mutha f**ka!"

Obviously you are a casual shooter. 89% of law enforcement shots don't hit their intended target. all are fired during high stress situations. The only thing repeatable in those situations is ergonomics and the NATURAL pointability of the pistol, NOT the officers training. To some this is a relavent consideration, to others its a reason to spew filth for no reason. With the Steyr that 89% would drop 10 points in an instant to 79% or I am willing to bet even more, that's how good this pistol points. Its by no means my favorite pistol but to poopoo its one strength in the way you did is really not necessary. you keep your stuff that goes bang, heck even firecrackers do that, I and will keep the one that hits the intended target everytime.

Only seen them in one store and listed for $750, worth every penny. you can find them on the EE for cheaper if you don't mind used. TSC north of Toronto should be able to get them in for you if they don't carry them.

Obviously I'm a casual shooter? Hahahahahaha, okay buddy. Obviously your powers of deduction suck, you also have never taken a stats course. "Most police shootings." Yea, show me your research and degree in Criminology and I'll take the time out of my day to talk to you about it. For the record, I mean REAL research, not that you went on the FBI's website. Lol. You suck.
