Steyr M95 help

I beg to differ.

I shoot M95 Steyr and M91 Mosin with far less than perfect bores and both shoot just fine.

I have seen number of rifles with pitted and dark bores, frost, even parts of rifling rusted away yet still shooting on par with many modern rifles.

If you are looking for cast plinker you might be better off with K31.There are many more choices of bullet molds in this caliber than for 8x56R.

That's great, but my slightly frosted Chilean .308 is good for maybe 30 shots and then I'm pushing strings of lead from the bore.

I did buy a k31 recently, though. The dies were the hardest things to find. I found a set yesterday after a frustrating month.

This thread might get me back to trying to get one of these guns to shoot well. I've tried:

- pulled bullets from 8X56 milsurp ammo;
- cast, sized 1-2 thou over groove diameter; and
- Speer jacketed 338 bullets sized down to groove diameter.

With various powder charges from SR4759 to H4350

And couldn't get two different guns to group better than 6" at 100.

I'm stubborn, but I just lost interest....

How about 2400 for cast loads? It's been doing stupidly well for me in early testing with a Mosin PU sniper and an M44. They differ on how much each likes, but both do well. Reloader 7 is another go to powder for me.

I've used 4759 only grudgingly since it likes to bridge in my measure and weighing every second charge in order to check for this gets old fast. I'll give it another go in the automatic dispenser I just bought.

Are you using gas checks?

Hmmm. I've seen some good results online from a few others, however they are few and far between.

The biggest limiting factor on my M95, I think, has to be the ridiculous trigger pull weight.

Ya. I'm going to try larger diameter bullets now that I have a new batch of RCBS 165 sil cast, and see if that helps. My old bullets were .309 loverin style tumble lubed. They could be on the small side. Those bullets haven't shot worth a damn in anything
