My buddy recently came across some ammo which we finally identified as Austrian 8 X 50R. The ammo is rusty and corroded in places, but looks shootable if it's cleaned up. The bonus is that it's on the 5 rnd. chargers. He has 3 of the chargers, so 15 rnds of the stuff. Any idea of the value? I know the ammo is not common, but it is around. Any knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

are you sure its 8 x 50 R ? reason i ask because its not to common to find while the 8x 56R is not hard to find.There is old pre WW2 ammo floating around and new Privi ammo is being sold. The surplus 8x56R can sell for around a buck a round plus a few bucks per clip.

For 8x50r the lots I see tend to move at about 2$ a round plus 5$ a clip, but that is if the ammo is in good shape. Since the ammo is corroded I would say 1$ a round, still 5$ a clip so about 30$ for the lot. It also depends on the year and manufacturer, if it is older ammo (like WWI dated) it could be worth more, and the manufacture might have a effect on pricing as well. Most 8x50r seen now is either Italian manufacture around the late 30s or Austrian dated around 1938 or Bulgarian dated late 30s. All of it is corrosive manufacture.
We have the book Cartridges of the World, and trust me, we looked pretty closely at the specs and you can find actual cartridge dimensions on Google. I'm pretty sure I've got the specs nailed down correctly, but thanks for cautionary.

Apparently the Russians made some in the 1950's with no head stamp. So did the Austrians according to a guy who lives near a W.W. I battle field. From the International Ammunition Assoc. forum.
The 8 x 50R's case length is 50.38 mm (1.983 in). 8 x 56R's case length is 2.200"(55.88mm).
There's a guy on Gunbroker who has been trying to sell 1 round of DWM made 8 x 50R for months with zero interest. Thinks its "very rare" and worth $55US.
