As usual, I was looking for something else and bumped into this:

Steyr-Mannlicher's ProHunter stainless in 30-06, gray plastic stock. Brand new.
First impression is very favorable despite of the cheap looking stock and very thin barrel. A bit weird gun but something makes me want one. ;)

Have you guys had any experience with ProHunter? What's the reasonable price for this gun? Any problems (other then price)?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

PS I'm not on a quest like "If I only had one gun" or "Ultimate kill-them-all-anywhere gun".... just another quality hunting gun. :)

My buddy has one and I've shot it. As a plus, it's very accurate and it's very light. As a minus, I absolutely hate the safety. For that reason, I wouldn't own one.

girlfriend's dad has one in 300 Win Mag. Very accurate rifle, smooth action & nice trigger. Heavy gun, and a big ugly IMO - I wouldnt buy one but he loves it

I had an "M". The bolt was pure ###, but it needed to kept clean to function reliably.

I had one briefly as well. Very accurate with love it or leave it styling (I personally liked the funkiness of it). It shouldered nicely with moderately good ergos. One stellar feature was the adjustable LOP with the stock spacers.
Like the other fellas here, I had no love for the safety. It was too awkward to operate quickly-just couldn't thumb that small wheel smoothly. As far as pricing goes, I see them listed between .9 to1.1k.
IMHO, there are much better rifles out there for that price point. (Just one guys $0.02 worth)

I have one in 6.5/55 an I like everything about it. The mag is unique with the 2 position insertion, the safty is to get used to not a big thing for getting rid of a fine rifle.

Plus:

- Accurate
- Good trigger
- Original look

Minus:

- Stock was pure crap. While deer hunting, the forearm was warping with temperature changes. Not to mention touching the barrel.
- Action was not smooth at all. Actually, it had to be used as a single shot. The pressure from the ammo in the mag was making quick follow up shot almost impossible.
- Bolt handle cute but not effective at all. Impossible to do fast following shot with gloves.

Conclusion: Brought back the pos to the dealer. Gave me my money back and sent it back the the distributor. Also told me that I was not the first and certainly not the last. Was very sad, 'cause the brand had a very good reputation. It did happen to me a few years ago.The model was a S/S Prohunter in 30-06.

My 2 cents :)

stranger, I owned one (30/06) some while ago, found it very accurate and comfortable to shoot...my mistake is. I sold it and bought a t3...dumb...dumb...dumb.

I had an SBS Prohunter in 300 Win Mag. As already mentioned, the rifle was very accurate even with the thin barrel contour, and the stock design goes a long way for absorbing recoil (300 feels like a 308).

After that, it was heavy, with a weak stock design (a friend broke his SBS in half at the wrist when he slipped and fell on a hunt, had to duct tape it together for the rest of the hunt!), and a sticky bolt, even though it is suppose to operate in icy or dirty conditions. IMO there are much better rifles out there starting with even a Tikka T3 or Rem 700 for just over half the price of the Steyr. JMO after owning and using all of them!

Thank you guys! As always I'm very impressed with collective knowledge of CGN! :)

I need to take a second look at actual gun in question... now I know better what to look at! ;)

Conclusion

UPDATE

As a result of carefull examination of the particular gun (no disassembling or firing) all the negative points outlined by the Team were confirmed as Very possible. Considering the price (not too low) I decided to walk away (this time).

Thanks again CGN!

pls remove

I have one in 30-06, shoots sub-inch. The barrel is free floating. It has the ugly green Cycolac stock and dull black finish. Double set factory triggers.

It ain't pretty, but it's the one I grab all the time to take to the range.

I'm not a hunter, being city bred, but it seems it would be perfect for hunting.

Top quality piece, I'd say.
