Now, I am the newbie here so I feel free to ask for help and advices and opinions ...

Where - in Canada - can I buy a Steyr Mannlicher SSG69 P11 rifle, caliber 308 Win. (the new one with open sights) ? They are available from the Company but nowhere to be found.

I know that those rifles are "old technology", pricey and that they cannot be rebarreled, etc, etc, but I simply happen to like them because I have seen what a Steyr SSG69 rifle can do - with a good shooter at the steering.

I wish me - and anybody else - good luck !

TIA

Hi there,

Try Wolverine Supplies, since they seem to carry some Steyr items. They're pretty good, even for small orders: I have a Parker Hale bipod (which actually is compatible with your rifle!) and I needed rubber feet for it, which Accuracy International provides - they delivered it within a reasonable amount of time (2 months), so they could probably help you out.

The link for them is at the top of the page (they're a site sponsor).

Had a Steyr-Mannlicher SSG 69 sniper rifle, police version (SSG P II) years ago. Shot beer caps at 200 yrds no problem. Liked the polygonal barrel, very accurate. However there is better stuff out there today for a better price.

Redman,

You are right : I have seen the ad in the Canadian Access to FIREARMS and it is close but not close enough. That rifle is a Steyr Mannlicher SSG69 P1, caliber 308 Win., but I am looking for a P11. If I have to fork out about 2,350.00$ - and I don't mind - I expect to get e-x-a-c-t-l-y what I want.
I got in touch yesterday with Kevin (Ellwood Epps) to confirm if the rifle is a P1 or a P11. No deal. I will leave the rifle to someone else.

Many thanks,

Snowy Owl

P I has a lighter barrel contour and irons. P II has a varmint weight barrel and no sights. I'm not sure of the finish on a P I but my P II is parkerized.
I like it - it has a little bit of nostalgia. My PSS in an A5 stock shoots as well. The Steyr is not as controllable as the Rem in the A5.

Dan,

Usually, the P1 has a green (olive, they say) stock and no "T" rail in the forend but the rifle for sale at Ellwood Epps has a black stock and a "T" rail in the forend. Still, it is definitely a P1.
And, usually again, the P11 does not have open sights but there is a new model available - a P11 with open sights - and this is the one I am looking for.
Mr. Oliver Bauer, from Steyr Mannlicher in Austria, confirmed, a few months ago, that the SSG69 P11 was now available with open sights - green stock or black stock.
On top of it, McMillan offers a "Steyr SSG P2 stock designed for the SSG on the A-3 pattern". Interesting, after all ...
Now, how I will manage to get that rifle is something else.
That will take some doing.

Hi Redman,

To tell the truth, the idea of asking Mr. Oliver Bauer (Sales Manager for Steyr Mannlicher in Austria) the name of his distributor(s) in Canada has never crossed my mind. It seems to me that it would be like trying to have access to some sort of "State secrets". On the other hand, I might be wrong. Perhaps I am bold if I ask and perhaps I am dumb if I don't.
The fact is that I know the name of one Steyr distributor in Canada and I have asked that distributor last year if the SSG69 rifles were available. The answer was "yes" with the usual suggestion of contacting a Steyr dealer, which I did, of course. Now, I don't want to harass that friendly Steyr dealer (Canadiangunnutz sponsor). The dealer cannot get what the distributor hasn't already bought - and imported.
The way I see it, the distributor seems to be the "choking point" and I think that the dealer doesn't have much to say. Again, I might be wrong.
Mr. Bauer told me (wrote me) that the SSG69 was still a "good seller" worldwide but, apparently, things are different in Canada.

Dead end ? Maybe. I don't know yet.

Voilà !

Hi there,

I can tell you:

1. The distributors are definetely not a state secret. Last year, I got in touch with the S&B sales mgr (Christian Krug, or something like that) asking for dealers in the Netherlands & Germany, and the guy delivered. I think Steyr will extend you the same courtesy regarding Canadian dealers/distributors.

2. Before getting my Blaser at Epps, I was gonna get it through The Shooting Edge (sponsor here) who didn't have it in stock and placed the order from the distributor to have it brought in. That's how it usually works: dealer gets order from customer, dealer makes order with distributor, distributor places order from manufacturer. I'm sure if you ask your "friendly Steyr dealer" nicely ;) they'll tell you whether they can deliver or not; you're a customer who wants to give them money for something, so I'd hardly call it "pestering them".

Keep us posted.
