One of the best rifles you can get as far as I am concerned.
The stock is absolutely the best I have ever seen for recoil absorbtion and is very comfortable to handle. The extra safety system is handy when you are crawling through heavy brush as you won't have to worry about it getting flipped off. Very accurate rifles with superb triggers.
I am still looking to buy one in 9.3*62 Mauser but they are impossible to find in this country.
If you happen to see one let me know, I will take two of them.
The Steyr is a rifle second to none in my book. Mine is the stainless model or the 'SS', chambered in 30-06. I mounted a Leupold VXIII on Leupold rings and bases (the prohunter takes the same bases as a Browning A-bolt) and I love the set-up. I also bought a package of "Pach-skin" from Pachymar to add some grip to the stock forend and palm swell area. This rifle is designed to shoot sub MOA from the box. You cannot bed or pillar mount this rifle either. You don't need too. It is built 'correctly' to begin with. Talking about accuarcy out the box, under an inch should be expected at 100 yds. Surprisingly, I achieved a ragged hole (3 shots) of about 1/4" ctc using Winchester ballistic silvertips 150 grns at 100 yrds. This is factory ammo!! I plan on reloading for some different parameters this winter, so that should be interesting.
I just bought mine this Nov., and love it. I use it for cagey whitetail, and found it great. It took a whitetail doe this Dec. at 200 +/- 10 yrds with a headshot. I normally wouldn't take such a headshot, but the confidence I have in this rifle and 30-06 cartridge...is second to none.
I hope this helps....pick one up today!
