Looking at getting a nice .223 to learn how to shoot decent distances. How does the Scout stack up in .223 for a long distance shooter? say for up to 300 yards or longer?

That's a cheap chinese knock off of a leupold. I'm not too optimistic regarding it's life span. They may be ok for airsoft, but on a real rifle...
 
I dunno I've heard favorable things about it...and I'm on a budget. I guess if it doesnt work out I'll buy the real thing eventually. What about the rifle though?
 
You have a good rifle. Seriously though, I'd sell the scope to an airsofter, and recoup as much as possible on it get get a Bushnell 3200 10x Mil-Dot. I think they go for like 300 something.
 
The scout was actually somewhat cheaper than $3000.
I want an accurate rifle to learn how to shoot with. I heard good things about this scope...do you guys have first hand knowledge with it or just assuming?

Are you saying the 700 is a cheap rifle?
 
It just seems illogical how you were considering the .223 Scout, which is a semi-high-end precision rifle, then wrote you're on a budget and got a .308 rifle with a knock-off scope. But at the end of the day it's your money so that's fine with me.

I was only considering the scout because of the excellent price of the one on the EE..since that's gone I was no longer considering it. I'm on a time constraint as well, I work almost 7 days a week and I'll be heading to my farm for a weekend soon and thats my only time I can shoot.

A scout would really be more accurate than that .308?

the Bushnell 3200 10x40 mil-dot scopes are priced as much as 235+taxes in any hunting store.....just check the Russell's or WSS....this is the up side....
the down side is that this model has a hunting parallax, set at 150m....so, just my 2 cents for it....

in general, Bushnell 3200 10x40 is a good chose for the money is priced :)

Hey try it out. If it keeps trackign fine and the glass is good enough for your needs, all the better. If you feel the need to change it, take a look at the Bushnell series.

And no, the 700 isnt a cheap rifle. It might not cost as much as a TRG-22 or a Steyr Scout, but it definitly is a great rifle. Will be accurate enough so that you can learn to shoot properly. I have shot groups between .3 and .5 inches at 100 yards with my 700 Police in .308. If you feel the rifle could be shooting a bit tighter, get a trigger job and get the action bedded, and you'll be good to go.
 
I'm basically a cheap person and I can be impatient too. I have caved in and bought stuff that I thought would "be good enough for what I want". It has bit me in the ass so many times over the years, especially when it comes to shooting components. There is no such thing as a top quality rifle scope for under a grand, but if that's what you can afford, so be it! welcome to the sport and I hope it serves your purposes until you can move up! It gets to be a sickness... I can assure you it won't stop at what scope to buy!

I know you cant dryfire a rimfire, but you can dryfire a pistol

Can you dryfire a centerfire bolt action rifle?
