Steyr scout

I had one for a while but the barrel is very small and heats up quickly. Accuracy was good. For the $2+K in funds tied up into it, I was able to get a ruger #1 carbine and an excellent scope....which tured out to be a better choice in the end. If I had endless funds, maybe but I think you can do more with your money to make a more effective rifle and better scope...

Cheers

It is a nice toy, but it doesn't worth the 2K. I had one and kept it for 2 weeks before returning it. The gun was too small for me and the action was terrible. Very hard to slide the bolt. After that, I had a SBS prohunter wich was a tack driver. The trigger was amazing, but again, the bolt was s**t... sold it again. Never went back....

Plasticky.

I handled one in .308, and it felt kind flimsy. Like cheap plastic. You'd be much better off with a Ruger Scout rifle. Who cares if it doesn't come with a hide-away plastic bipod. Save your money.

I agree the bolt is a bit stiff but can be worked on.

Bipod is a great backup but it's certainly not suitable for day-to-day use.

You can get 10 rds conversion kit, and it's damn light for carrying on your back.

IMO, it's a good general purpose rifle that does everything well but not geared towards specific use.

Did you get to shoot it, or just fondle it in a gun shop?

Bowie,
Definitely buy the rifle, and a bunch of ammo. The only sure way to judge that gun would be to take it on a road trip to Lethbridge and let your friend do some field trials!!

It is a good rifle but I think overpriced. If you can afford it, it is a good rifle and to be honest, I liked it. I just thought for the dollars invested, I good do better. The rifle is 2K and add a decent scope and your close to $3K invested. You can alot with $3K when it comes to a hunting firearm and scope....I never found it to flimsy or anything like that....just overpriced...

I shot 10 rounds off. Accuracy was okay at 100 yds. On average 2MOA. It just didn't feel right to me. In the back of my mind I kept on thinking this was some kind of marketing gimick conspired with Thunder Ranch and Styer to sell a "politically correct" assault rifle.

Yes I guess you could consider that's it's a bit overpriced. On the other hand mine is very/very accurate, fantastically ergonomic and once I got the bipod sorted out with an aluminum replacement for the plastic mounting stud, extremely reliable.

The whole is definately greater than the sum of it's parts with this rifle and Cooper knew what he was on about. I sold four rifles that the Steyer superseded and you know the saying beware the man with one gun.

Also .308 is hard to beat...

Mmmm, could have dickered on the price me thinks. The regular Scout is a good rifle, but its something you either want or don't. I have shot a number of them, and had the Tactical Elite, and performance from all was excellent.
The stock can be modded with an adjustable butt and an adjustable cheekpiece, easily done, for less than 100$s last I saw.
The stock is far from flimsy, very ergonomic I found.
The bolt is something that shows the shooters skill or lack of it. Maybe 30 people tried my Elite, one found the bolt hard, the others found it easy to use. It has to do with the design, if you are used to sloppy crap guns and banging the bolt around the Scouts are gonna bind up on you, you need to be a Rifleman as Cooper would have told you. Deliberate smooth actions.
I personally never really cared for the scout, but in they were all accurate, half MOA class rifles out to about 300yds. They were also tough as nails.
As for the bipod, it was not something I wanted on the Elite, and used a PH instead, but did fire the odd shot off of the factory one. It was ok, but it was never meant to compete with a PH style one.
Mags are great, bolt disassembly a breeze, rotary safety is OK.
Used, for a good price, I would say maybe. I never liked the thin fluted scout barrels, but then again its not my scene, thats why I went with the Elite.

Dosings comments are right on the money.
The scout I had, had the slickest bolt everr. Felt smooth like glass.
First 2 or 3 shots would typically be touching, then groups opened up with rising barrel temp. Heavy barrel version would be a welcome addition.
Good used price should be around 1300 - 1600 I think. Use it with a Ching sling!
