Steyr SSG question

I would be disappointed in MOA. I have shot numerous 1/4 MOA groups at 100 (3 shots) with my Steyr 7mm RM and have been just over 1/2 MOA at 500 yards. I've now joined a range that has a 1000 yard facility so I'm interested in shooting farther.

I'd like to stay well under $2000 (not including optics) and not keen on Savage. Also would like to have an adjustable LOP without AR style butt. Not interested in a chassis and it should be as much under 10 pounds as possible.

I would seriously consider takin a look at the Remington 700 5R Milspec.

I say this a lot on here but, Accuracy International.

The older style stock and the newer AT bother use spacers in the butt. Might be a bit heavier than what you're looking for.

I agree - sort of. There is really nothing not to like about the AI products - great actions, great design, flexibility,durability under all conditions and of course accuracy. The price is high which is certainly reflected in the quality of the package you are buying. But it is a specialized rifle and the weight makes it tough to use as an all rounder. The SSG (and the Rem Milspec 5R m 700) are much better 'all rounders' and can (particularly the SSG assuming you have an SSG69 'Pl' with the lighter barrel and iron sights) be used quite satisfactorily as a hunting rifle.

Of course once you decide weight isnt a problem for you because it is just going to be a 'range' princess ... AND also that you really arent a military sniper ... then there are a whole world of very accurate (and heavy) rifles to chose from -- and many much cheaper than an Al...

which of course will leave you with more money to practice -- and allow you to best an AI in a match

Might as well look at the Steyr Prohunter. Same cold hammer forged barrel as the SSG 69.

Have had a used ssg 69 p2 with set triggers for several years that gets used extensively in the hot summer and bitter winter. Have had no breakage issues other than breaking the magazine guide pin on the housing of the mag (self induced) while reassembling the magazine. Modified a bolt to fit a Harris bipod and the rail . Rifle has lots of rounds through it and still shoots 5 shot groups at 100yds well under .5 inch prone. Excellent rifle.

Ssg69 is pretty sweet.

Another option to consider would be the tikka t3x ctr.

Those are Vortex, the model is "Precision Matched Rings" I believe.

Agreed. That is a deeply inpressive rifle. As is the ssg08 that replaced it. How much does the ssg04 weigh out of curiousity?

I thought they were too but the factory still take orders. There's a SSG 04 A1 variant as well.

10.4 lbs with 20" barrel
10.8 lbs with 24" barrel
11 lbs with the 27.2" barrel

I'll be honest, I really really tried to find any reason to get SSG04 and I can't.

It's a $4k USD rifle to begin with, with no aftermarket for anything. You really really have to like it out of the box as it is to live with that. I don't see how this stock would make me happy for $4K.

Resale value is questionable, parts are special order, I guess even magazines are a bit luck to find. And its discontinued. At $5K CAD to spend I would just order Cadex or something.

MAGIC PARTS.

I do get where he is coming from. Some of the dealers overcharge and have a sticker of 4kish. Which then brings it into trg/pgw/ai territory. And since admittedly I'm a complete ai slut the option becomes immediate at least for me.

And I think what owl owl is forgetting here is that the top end rifles don't lend well to being tuner bases. For that there is other actions and options. These rifles are built to be take it out of box. Put stupid tight groups at stupid long distances with good glass on top.
