Anybody have one of these, or even personally fired/handled one? If so, what is your opinion of it? I've always wanted one, and am getting to the point where I will soon be able to afford it, but they're not cheap and I'm hesitant to drop that kind of cash without handling one first. Any thoughts, both good and bad, will be appreciated.

I had one, 26" with 12 magazines, Hendsolt 10X and PH bi-pod. I sold it about 6 years ago and have regretd it ever since, they are great rifles.

Very nice, but beware, parts and accessories, are only available from stocking dealer. It to forever to get extras, and lots os $$$$ too.
I have one although it is modified slightly. The previous owner installed a muzzle brake
on it and the threads were so messed up/crooked I had the barrel shortened and recrowned. Still an extremely accurate rifle, performing much better than I can.

Ssg 69 P2
I have an SSG 69 P2 tactical and it is the second SSG I have owned. The first one I had had set triggers and was the classic Green Machine. It came out of Jeff Coopers training facility in California but I found it awkward to shoot with the set trigger so I sold it to a buddy of mine. Good luck getting it back from him. I really liked the Kahles six-power scope, I have never had a scope with the same quality as that one. I guess when you have had the best you can’t go back to the lowly Bushnell scopes.
I had the opportunity to purchase an SSG 69 P2 black rifle with single trigger and 5 shot mags. I like it and won’t sell it so don’t ask. It has taken me six years and some scraping to find two 10 shot mags for the gun and I like them better than the 5 shot rotary mags. I don’t know why they made the mags out of a synthetic material because they are prone to jamming, and are awkward to remove. The stocks seems hollow compared to the HS Precision stocks but keeps the weight down. At one time HS Precision made some stocks for the SSG rifles imported into the US. I tried to find out about them, but didn’t get much information from HS Precision. They were manufactured under special contract for a military or police group and that’s all I found out.
If you want an accurate out of the box rifle you can’t go wrong with the SSG.

A friend has an SSG Match. Both triggers, Walther diopter sights, Steyr rings, Kahles 10x. It was a frustrating rifle - it would invariably shoot 4 touching, and a slight flyer. Flex in the Cycolac stock may have been a factor. I obtained the factory walnut stock and that cured the flyer problem. It is superbly accurate now.
I agree with all the statement above about the quality and accuracy of the rifle.

I sold it because I like to have a little more "meat" on the stock and the aftermarket accessories are very limited/$$$$
I now have a Rem 700P with a Shilen trigger that cost less than the SSGP2 and shoot as accurate.

I owned an Israeli Army surplus SSG 69 with the Kahles 6X scope. I purchased the combination in the late 80's for $650. It was an abosolute joy to shoot, and a tack driver. It came to Canada at the same time as the surplus M14's.
Standard green cycolac stock, with the quick detach rings and three mags. It was a really nice rifle, but in a fit of poverty and apparantly a weak mind, I sold it.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on about these rifles and it seems like the only downsides to them is the cost, and some people find the stock a little less solid then they would like. Anybody have an idea what a used one would go for, should I come across one?
I owned one years ago, with a 2.5-10-56 scmidth and bender and all the goodies. like a dummy sold it due to a divorce. Loved shooting beer eh I mean pop caps at 200yrd. However even if I had the cash to do it over again I get something else. There is alot of just as good or better guns cheaper out there. Such as my PH 1200Tx . McMillan shows a SSG stock on their website. Again, bring money.
Nice rifle. Odd looking mag well. Shoots fine from all reviews I have read. Which proves that hammer forging can make a decent barrel.
However, when talking that type of money, you have a lot of options including full meal deal customs.
Get whatever dream rifle floats your boat, just wanted to add that other options are available for that type of coin.

Just came accross this while taking a break from mowing the lawn. Was thinking of selling something ( safe is actually so full it si getting to be a problem) you have convinced me not to sell my SSg. It is so reliably accurate it is sorta boring. The 10 shot mag I had was fragile and unreliable, I wouldn't spend money on one. Back to the yard!

I picked up a SSG PIV (used, without a single scratch inside or out)with an extra compensator for $1500. The 30mm rings cost another two hundred and change from Wolverine.. along with 10 rd. mags. Parts are available, but it can take 6 months to a year to get something in. I've been told things need to be worked out with Steyr.
Handling? Almost spooky accuracy. Very low recoil for a .308. Short, heavy and solid.

I owned an SSG PII with the Kahles 6x scope and EAW rings, the black one, I bought it new when I was posted to Germany in '86 and don't regret selling it at all. It wasn't a bad rifle but you could buy/build something as good or better for less. I feel that you are paying a lot just for the name and the cool factor some people perceive with these rifles.

I know a fellow who got 2, wanted to sell it, but He wanted $3000 for one of them, it is brandnew but I don't believe it worth that much, he having a hard time shooting 168BTHP, the best group he got was around 2.5 inchs at 100meter, I rather put that money in good use and buy 3 rem700 PSS...

Tried ours many years back at 300m prone, with sling only and 12X Schmidt & Bender no.3 reticle.

Once sighted in, ten straight X's with Fed 168 Match. X ring is about 2 inch diameter on the 300m ISSF target we used.
Even IVI stayed pretty much in the 10 ring, about 4 inches in diameter.
Will never be up for sale.
