Steyr STM556

I recall reading somewhere that Steyr did manage to make the AUG hold its zero when removing and reinstalling a barrel. Same barrel, I presume, but still good to know it can be done.

I like the idea of a QC barrel. Apparently, QC sporting rifles in different calibres are popular in Europe due to laws limiting the number of guns one can own. So one gun and 5 barrels is fine.
 
I'm sure the QC system is innovative, but it's also no doubt proprietary. It sports a monolithic upper which precludes the use of any of the new lightweight rail systems. Anyone's guess how the piston system rates among the other heavy hitters. I recall reading somewhere that it's around 7lbs empty, so it's not exactly on the lighter end of the spectrum.

At the end of the day it's still a $3k+ restricted AR15. Maybe there's demand for it in Europe, I just don't see it filling anything other than a niche here in Canada.

Agreed, its not that I don't like the steyr but one could definetly build a sick DI or piston setup with enough money for a nice optic and still be right around the 3k mark. The quick change barrel is nice, however it would be obvious to say its impractical for my useage. I don't think the AUG is super special either. Don't get me wrong its cool, but I just want an AUG because we can't have them.:(

I seriously doubt STEYR MANNLICHER.( a world renown company) would make a gun as well known to the world in an AR configuration and have it shoot goofy..........

It probably shoots just fine. But just from a first glance at that flash hider, I can guarantee you that it is not an efficient design if they designed it just to mitigate flash signature. Perhaps it was made to use with a can, it doesn't the look like it, but it's hard to tell from a photo. Tapering a flash hider at the muzzle is goofy and they should know better.

This is pretty funny....I would get one too.for collector reasons.......I bet the AR trigger in there would work nice.......I don't know why the Europeans don't add some better pistol grip on there variants like the AUG and G36 series...

The upper is a one piece because of the QC barrel setup...

It's also right in the price range of it's intended competition. Sig 516 and H&K 416 (which I would rather have and forget the swappy bits).

Worrying about it finding a niche here in Canada is moot since it's for LE/MIL that might choose it over the aformentioned because of the QC system. With possible 300 Blackout and 6.5 Gren options following on if you can believe whats been written about it in the last few days.

I do agree though. It's just another piston AR and since the AUG "US" isn't available here I really doubt this will ever be either....
