Steyr SSG P2
Sako Trg-22
Sig SSG3000

I have every intention of handling them all before I make my decision, but I would like to hear people's opinions of them all. I've posted about the Steyr before, and I've gone through all the posts about the Trg, but I haven't been able to find anything on here about the Sig. Personally, I'm leaning towards the Steyr, but I'm not a fan of the stock, and to replace it with a McMillan will add another $1000 or so to the cost. That's money I'd prefer to be spending on a better scope.

As far as the TRG is concerned, add $600 to the quoted price as you will want a bipod. Also, read the manual (link below) to become familiar with this rifle's features. Its a highly tweakable (by user) rifle and misunderstandings about its features abound. The trigger bears mention, its the "glass rod" breed and can be set very light.

Happy shopping!

Thanks for the manual. Is the Sako bipod the only one that will work, or can you use a Harris type? And are the magazines really $300?

The Sako bipod is the only one that will work and magazines do cost about $300. You wouldn't need a spare Mag IMHO but the bipod and (in the case of the 42) muzzle brake options aren't really optional. You need em. Though muzzle brakes and scope bases etc. can be had from sources other than Sako, the bipod cannot. Its a unique and robust unit that lives up to Sako quality but they certainly don't give em away.

I'm not a critic of the Sako TRG, in fact I have a 42 and love it. Just be aware of the bipod issue when comparing prices. :)

I've seen a TRG-42 at P&D with a Harris bipod on it. They had an adapter on the sling-swivel rail that allowed it to work, but to be honest I didn't much like the look of how it attached.

Look around for the SSG 3000, a number were brought into Canada a few years ago as packages, and were selling at a good price. Last I heard there was a new one sitting on a shelf in southern Ont for less than 3K.

Yes you can get a UIT style adapter to run Harris, or Versa Pod, or Parker Hale, etc.

I have shot all three and would go with the Sako hands down. I know Epps has a SSG-3000, it is used, but it is nice, I would still go with the Sako. Personally for that kind of $$$, I would have something built.

Could you please PM me with the location of a New SSG3000 for less than $3000. Ellwood Epps has one right now, but it's used and they want $3900 for it.

Before you commit to a high end factory rifle like a Sako,Sig, I would suggest you contact a couple of good gunsmith to see what a good custom gun will run you. Chances are the $$ are comparable and the custom will likely out perfrom the factory.

Man I'd love an SSG-3000...but screw these rifles (unless you have the money to blow); go buy yourself a Remington 700P or LTR and build on that one, way more worth the money. I have heard nothing but good about TRG's though.

I personally don't like 700's. I find their trigger awkward and they don't shoulder well for me. While I'm sure I could eventually get it right, I would want to play with it for a while first and an uncomfortable gun is no fun to shoot. Plus, once you re-stock the 700, tune it and do whatever else it takes to get it down to 1/2 MOA, you're looking at the same cash as the rifles I'm looking at. So, no 700's for me.

Awkward trigger? My 700's tuned trigger is the best I've ever shot with, and I've shot with a few two-stage match triggers. Also, the HS Precision stock doesn't work for everyone, but that's easily sold (buy a Chasis system or a McMillan). And I bought my bedded, floated, tuned 700P from a smith in Calgary for $1195, and I will be surprised and dissapointed if this doesn't shoot 1/2 MOA with reloads. I'd like to see one of the rifles you've listed for just under $2000.

It's not the trigger itself I don't like, it's the position of it. I find it to close to the grip. I have long fingers and the natural position of my hand on a 700 is with my whole finger wrapped around the trigger. I can barely even touch it with just the tip of my finger. I've never held one in a McMillan stock, so I don't know if it's any better, but again, it's not something I want to throw a whole bunch of money at, only to find out it doesn't work for me. Rohann, could you PM me with the name of the smith you got yours from? Maybe he'll know. Also, was yours used for that price?

Precision Rifles

If you are going to pay $3000 for a firearm build it.
I have have Sako's, had an Armament Technology .223, and have an SSG 69 P2. I like the SSG because it fits. But I wouldn't pay $3000 for it. Look around and find the cal, receiver, barrel, trigger, and stock that fits you. Build one that fits you, not something that is a trophy.
If you are into show, then buy one that stands out.

Amen. A $350 - 450 Smith, Gaillard, or McPhee 30 cal barrel will outperform a factory SSG hands down.

...For less than a grand you could have your own uber tactical stock from MacMillan,

...Or you could go Rem 700 SA, ($5-650),custom barrel (650 with chamber) and an Accuracy International Chassis System (~1100) setup that will outshoot the best factory Sig. and have the look cool factor, or if you have a need to hemorrhage cash on a factory gun, maybe consider an Accuracy International from Woverine Supply.

Ask Skullboy about his AICS setup, somewhere here he has pictures.

I forget the name of the place, but it wasn't Epps.
You would have better luck PMing sxyglock17, he knew where it was.
