STI 1911 6 inch .45 super

I don't think you will find any factory .45 Super ammo.... at least not in Canada. It's pretty much a wildcat round. The round is basically the same size as a .45 ACP round, uses standard .45 bullets and, but requires a heavy walled case (otherwise identical to a .45 ACP case), loaded with more powder than a standard .45 ACP. The idea was to get a .45 auto that was moving projectiles in the 1000+ fps range but could use the same basic gun (with a beefed up chamber) and mags as normal .45 ACP.

I think Starline makes the brass and you should be able to load it using standard .45 ACP dies. As long as you have some good reloading data, you should be good to go.

All steel framed 1911 can be made into a 45supers; just need to change to heavier springs (main spring and fire pin spring), shock buffs , a good guide rod will help and a ramped barrel would not hurt.

You can get starline brass to reload with or modify .308 brass; ARMCO was selling modified brass at one time. Ammo is available but expensive and hard to get.

Read all about it here. ###.acecustom45s.com

The 45 Super case is the same external dimensions as a regular .45 ACP. The case is thicker and stronger especially at the base to take higher pressures.
To turn a regular .45ACP 1911 into a .45 Super, the recoil spring is changed to a 22 or 24 lb spring, the firing pin spring is also changed to a stronger one. The regular 45ACP barrel stays.

In the U.S. a couple of companies loaded 45 Super ammo but they are easy to reload. Starline makes .45 Super brass & there is reloading data available.
Gunner at Armco used to make the brass from 308 cases. He still might.

It is an easy & inexpensive way to get a 45 with a fair bit more power. Also, regular 45ACP ammo can be used.
The only danger is by accident loading a 45 Super round into a regular .45ACP gun.It will chamber fine but it will probably cause a real problem.

According to acecustom45s.com, Para is one of the manufactures that they will build a .45super on. The para comes with the ramped barrel.

RAMPED barrel means MORE metal, not less ... like a Para Ordnance style barrel.

If you want a .45 Super, make sure you get a ramped barrel .... I actually blew the barrel lugs off a 6" SS non-ramped barrel developing HOT loads in my .45 SUPER.

I replaced the barrel with a 6" RAMPED SS barrel, and had a lot of fun with the SUPER. I loaded 180 Gr to 1400 fps, and 230 to 1150 fps, and shot it at bowling pins. The .45 SUPER billets sure motivated them thar pins!!!!
Now that was simply SUPER!!!

PS: Gunnar @ ARMCO has developed a proprietary case [ .308 Win/.45 ] and loads that are hotter or equivalent to .45 SUPER. Talk to him about building you one.

Para is not so great from what I read and hear.... STI makes it in a six inch slide and barrel looks slick

If you can get an early Para there are no issues with them. Springfield Armoury made the 45 super as well for a very very short time but good luck in finding one.

The weakest point in a 45ACP with an unramped barrel is the bottom back of the case. The small area where the brass is exposed & not supported by any metal. Regular 45ACP loads operating at about 20,000 PSI are fine. The brass will hold the pressure.
Get up into 45Super pressures and the regular 45ACP case will let go. The Super brass is thicker & can take the pressure.

Just found a picture of a 45ACP loaded to too high a pressure & fired in an unsupported barrel .

I think that there is a 6" bbl 10mm STI called the Perfect 10. There was one for sale at Phoenix Range in Edmonton last week.
