STI 1911 6 inch .45 super

the 45 super is just ONE of the so-called "HOT" 45 cartridges- i think one of the first was the 451 detonics- it used 308 brass cut down- about the most viable i've seen was a one of gunnar's creations- and , unlike the others, his actually WORK- a 45/08 or something- there's also the 460 ROWLAND which is popular down stateside, but sonner or later they all come back to the 45acp

Should I go down this road or just get a. 45 apc

well, if you go down this road, chances are you'll come back- you pay prices for the wildcats in terms of recoil, wear and tear, powder, and availablity as well as RELAIBLITY- your 45acp will ALWAYS do what you want, provided you accept it's limits- the roland, was concieved to give 44 mag performance on a 45 acp frame, but not all 45 frames will accept it- then there's the problem of brass- a lot of times you will start out with 50 or 100, but you ALWAYS come back one or 2 short- and some 45s, when set up for magnums or "hot" loads, don't like to cycle factory or standard 45acp rounds

I think you should get a .45 ACP because it's a lot easier to find ammo. I rarely even see .45 ACP +P and have never seen .45 Super ammo (at least in Canada). I would get a .45 Super if you start reloading because Double Tap Sports has Starline .45 Super brass. Hodgdon also has a section on reloading .45 Super. Reloading is safe if you can concentrate without interruptions, are meticulous, and follow instructions exactly. If you learn to reload you could just get a .50 GI :D: http://www.guncrafterindustries.com/50gi_cartridge.shtml

the 45 super ( or souper if you prefer) offers only a MARGINAL upgrade in performance- it's made from SHORTENED 451 DETONICS BRASS- which was originally made from 308/06 brass, depending on what you had on hand- so from what i understand the family goes like this- 460 rowland, which is longer and thicker - then 451 detonics, which is SLIGHTLY LONGER, and uses thicker RIFLE brass, then 45 super, which is the same length as the acp and uses THICKER rifle brass, and the the 45 acp- so what's the difference?- well, if you use 45super in a STANDARD 45acp, chances are the head will come apart just ahead of the extractor groove, because it's NOT SUPPORTED - if you use 45acp in a 45 super, it probably won't cycle properly- if you go to a 45 with a supported barrel, you might be able to step on it a little- maybe into 45 super territory, provided you use shortened rifle brass or 45 super brass- the other 2 are head and shoulders above in terms of performance , powder consumption, recoil, and everything else- like what a 338 win mag is to an 06- the rowland REQUIRES a compensator to make it work- i don't know where gunnars conversion falls

Should I go down this road or just get a. 45 acp

In the past I had a 45 Super and at another time a 400 Corbon ( a necked down 45 ).
Unless one can go hunting with a 1911 or carry one for defense, I see little advantage to them & a lot of hassles. Plus one mistake can ruin your day.

My opinion. Standard 45 ACP.

Seems like a big hassle if ammo is not available. ... I hate reloading plus I hate chaseing brass so its jet a regular .45 for my bday gift to me. .. any one stock the STI trojan that will pick up the phone?

Have you tried Freedom Ventures? They're the Canadian Distributor for STI. They are in Nova Scotia, so be mindful of the 3 hour time difference.

Congrats on the decision to get the Trojan, by the way. You will not be disappointed, it is an amazing gun!
