Hi There! I'm looking into buying a new handgun for standard division for IPSC and I came down to getting either the edge or an executive in .40.....Question is, What's the difference between the Edge and the Executive aside from the price? Tanfoglio limited custom came to mind too btw...what can you say about the limited custom in .40?

I asked that to one of the RO's at the Spruce Grove Alberta match because he had an Executive and my Black Badge instructor has an edge and the difference used to be that the executive was a better functioning gun he told me. However he says times have changed and the only thing different is the executive has a grey grip, and is only available in hardchrome, and of course...the price. I also think executive is only available in .40 where as the edge is 9mm,38super, .40 and .45

Buy the Edge unless you want the shiny gun. Use the money for ammo and/or putting an Aftec extractor in it. After its broken in and if you plan on using it for competition. The stock extractor is fine though. This way you would have a back up for matches.

I have not owned an Edge but I can honestly say that I loved my Executive (not more than many of my other guns, but I loved it). Much like a Swiss Arms rifle, the $3k you drop on the Executive is not wasted (not sure what they run nowadays). I personally like the Hard Chrome finish so that made the price tag much easier to swallow :D

Raytorm,

I applaud your idea. Either gun will serve you a purpose.
Depends on your location contact a good gunsmith and ask
him what do I need to modify in STI, there are few things.
I own Edge and I own a clone based on SVI frame and both
are heavy modified for my likeness.
For sure, you will need to get Aftec, ask a good gunsmith about
customizing grips in my opinion it is very important, STI most likely
is supplied with recoil master, some guys like it some don't. Find out
more about that and see what other options you have, like putting
heavier tungsten guide rod with 13lbs spring.
If you have smaller hands, you may need extension on your mag release.
I like my Doug Koenig low mass hammer and SVI sear, disconnector and sear spring.
Installing SVI trigger is a bonus as well, this allows you to run different trigger inserts
in your system.
I say, STI is a great gun, but for me is more like platform to improve even more and
make a ultimate SD IPSC gun.

Good Luck

Hi there..

I own and shoot a Tanfoglio Limited Custom in .40 S&W. Its a fantastic gun.. There are many differencea between the Edge and the Executive and the Tanfoglio Limited Custom. The first is the trigger.. The Tan has a hinged trigger where both the other guns have a slotted trigger. The Tan trigger is more like a revolver trigger, for what ever that is worth. One draw back of the Tan Limited Custom is that the Mags break when you drop them on a cement floor. Because we can only import 10 rd mags in this country, Tanfoglio has dimpled the front and back of the Mag to keep the Mag follower from being able to go to full capacity. However in addition they Lazer cut all the rest of the Mag except the dimple. This means that some of them will crack when you drop themn on a cement floor... I had one do that after only a few hundred rounds shot. In addition i get many requests to handle my gun. People like the large square trigger guard.. Others like the stippled front and back strap. Still others like that it fits into the IPSC box ... right out of the box.. No messing about. It come with a Mag Well and 2 mags. Currently the Mags cost $81 a piece from Freedom Ventures, but they seem to have lots of them and are really good about any warranty work.. My recommendation would be to but a Tan Limited Custom.. and you can probably get two guns for the price of 1 STI executive. I do plan on getting a twin for my Tanfoglio Limited custom myself... then you never have to worry about traveling to a match and having your gun break....

Here is a pic of my Tanfoglio Limited Custom for your Viewing pleasure

Tanfoglio is a great looking gun, handles really good, is very accurate.

If you want to shoot 2-3K a year this is a gun to get,
however if you want to get into IPSC for real, STAY AWAY
from this gun.

Myself, I have seen many frustrated shooters when, slide or frame cracked,
extractor broke, barrel issues and not to mention magazines.

Tanfoglio is from Italy but in Europe in SD is not even in par with CZ, more Italians
shoot STI or SVIs before they go to Tanfoglio.
Go to IPSC.org and check it out yourself.

Good Luck,

Thanks for all the opinion guys! They're all really helpful. Leaning towards getting the Executive for IPSC..Still fairly new in the game..have only a few matches last year. I'm currently using the CZ SP01 in Production Division. Saw that Executive at the IPSC alberta sight but i just not sure how to contact the guy...guess i have to sign up still at their site..Thanks again!

I just wanted to respond to your post about the Tan problems. Well i shoot 500 rounds a week and have been shooting this gun for 6 months with no issues. While all makes of guns have slides crack (depends on who you talk to) The extractor is easy to replace even at a match if it does break (which has not happened yet. And have not had any barrel issues to date. I do know a very good shooter who would never buy an STI ever again... so i really think it depends on who you talk to... Anyway.. I like my Tan...
