so i just bought a couple mags to gear up for my BB in august, i was trying the mags in my GP6 and there is 1 out of the 6 that i have that wont drop free with the mag release you have to push the release and physically pull the mag out?!

the other 5 mags drop completely free and easy without any assist from me

any ideas? i through a calliper all over the bad mag and all the measurements are the same as the good mags +-.001"

Have to say that mine are not the slippiest(not a real word) either. They release ok, but dont spring out like the 1911. How do they drop with full mag?
Interested to see if there are any solutions? Maybe lead bases?.......
Import.

I'm thinking it could be the cutout in the mag where the latch catches or the latch itself that needs a little smoothing out.
One of my mags is hard to seat and only hooks up if you slam the base firmly.

Can you see any wear marks on the mag?

There are several generations of K100 gun. I had original K100, K100 Mk6 and STI GP6. They are using the same mags. There were at least two different versions of base pads. But the dimensions of mags and pads looks like are the same. I owned K100 for number of years before i got STI GP6 used from my friend and found that mags i already have are difficult to latch in, you need really snap it hard to lock and it will not drop freely ether. The mags which came with the gun apparently had the same issue, but they were fixed by my friend in very simple way - the rectangular latch window on mags was drilled with bigger diameter. So, looks like it is a some dimension change introduced by STI. (Talking about "excellent" STI job - it is not only one problem they introduced in excellent original design - i had myself extractor issues for a while, which i fixed by installing extractor from my older gun. And i got broken hammer parts in my face. My friend also broke hammer twice before selling this gun to me. No wonder that Freedom Ventures now has STI GP6 on sale for $500) Anyway, back to the problem. I did't really like the way my friend fixed a problem by drilling holes in mags. But he claims that they work well after that. Also i was't quite sure that dremmeling the frame of the gun will be be a good option ether. Instead i dremmeled a base pads a bit. And later i found even better solution - i installed rubber covered metal pads from tanfoglio, which i was planing to use anyway - they are heavier, easier to drop and rubber coating helps with mags handling. Several months later i got other gun - GP6C and it has same issue with mags.
It is difficult to tell what are the dimensions STI screwup. Most probably the latch itself, since they changed its design as well. So, the proper solution would be to bring the gun to gunsmith to adjust lenght of mag latch lever, i guess. When magazine is inserted, it should be a bit loose, there should be some space between frame and basepad. To be honest, the magazine latch mechanism and trigger pull are much softer in comparing with original design. The bottom line - you are not only one having this issue and the magazines are not the one to blame. If you really experiencing the same issue like i'm describing, then you should try to insert and drop mag without base pad installed. Even without magazine spring installed, it should fell out just using own weight when you press the button.

Some photos, left to right: mag with original base pad, dremelled out (notice it is slightly thinner) and tanfoglio (it looks thicker but in reality is fits much better)

Adjusting the notch in the mag or mags that aren't seating or dropping well seems like a good place to start.

all the mags i have i bought from Phoenix and they are all STI mags, but only the one mag has this issue.

thank you Stue for the info i will look at all your points...but i dissagree with the "the magazines are not the one to blame" as all the other mags work perfectly..

in any case i will try filling the latch windo a bit and see if that helps.

looking at your pictures stue i noticed 2 of my mags have the "split" half way down and the other 4 dont... do you know why this is? again all the mags i have are STI branded

Looks like the slot is there to deter people from drilling out the divet that blocks the follower at 10 rounds.

Stue- It is hard to tell in your pics but is the mag window made wider and longer or just wider? Any idea of what size drill bit was used or how much the window was expanded? I have the same problem with my mags as you.

looks as though it was both widened and lengthend..

i talked with the pistol guru at my local shop and he suggested against "drilling" and said, simply use a small file and shave tiny bits at a time inbetween test the mag frequently

File a bit, test and repeat till it's good.
Why not take a few measurements from the mags that work as well and compare it to the bad one.

Well when i got home i grabbed a small file and worked the latch window filed it down by .0001" and now it works perfectly! Thanks guys

I have 4 or 6 drilled mags, i can exchange for couple of yours, for me they are useless, they are to loose in original K100. As i said, drilling out window is not the best approach out there.

My mag release button seemed a little stiff so I squirted some oil in it. Then took a chainsaw file and worked the holes on the mags. All 5 mags seem to work better now with just a little material removed.
