I know, this is going to sound pretty stupid and I can only imagine the number of "RTFM you moron" replies this is going to garner.

I just recently got me a brand spanking new STI Spartan and, to prep it to be fired, I got it into my ugly head to take it apart to get rid of the last of the packing grease.

Getting the slide off, no problems. Bit awkward without a notch to lock the slide in place while pulling out the takedown pin, but no biggy.

The problem is in removing the recoil spring and the guide rod. I am unable to do it. The manual states that I should make a hook of sorts with a paper clip and use it to lock the spring in place against the guide rod somehow. Now, there is no hole in the guide rod that I can see, as the manual states I should be seeing, and I find myself unable to remove the spring and guide rod in order to get to the barrel.

I'm thinking that it could be because I'm just not strong enough to separate the head of the spring from the guide rod and to hold the spring in place while pulling the rod out, or that spring needs to be "softened up" with a few shots so I can easily remove it. Any thoughts anyone?

try putting it back together (slide on frame with all the bits in) then retract the slide until you see the hole and put the hold open in. Take the top off with spring pinned and your golden - no?

I have a spartan and there is no hole in the slide. I think that the book is for several models and I just reassemble, in the old fashioned way, with a bit of muscle to hold every thing to gether.

Mine doses have a takedown notch. Just a small one behind the holdback notch by a couple of centermeters.

Can you get the slide back on the frame and reinsert the slide stop? If so, disassemble by clearing the Spartan, #### the hammer, and set the safety. This will lock the slide in place and you should be able to remove the full length guide rod (FLGR). Install a GI recoil spring, recoil spring guide, and recoil spring cap. Next is the important step and it is: "throw the FLGR in a box and forget its location." Regards, Richard:)

Well, here we go. With a bit of help and that right wonky bushing/barrel/takedown/wtf whatchacallit wrench I managed to take her apart.

And without taking out my eye or my laptop with the spring and the bushing when they flew out.

Moral of the story: if RTFM won't work, ask around :)

Thanks folks.

Here's a thought...

Any thoughts anyone?
