STI Spartan failures to extract

Howdy,

so, I have had my Spartan (9mm) for about 2 months now and since the start it has been giving me extraction problem.

The very first time at the range, it would occasionally leave the empty case on top of the magazine; this would happen only on the last round of the mag. I didn't give it much thought as it was the last round and the upcoming magazine change would take care of that.

From there, the issue seems to be getting progressively worse, to the point that last time I was unable to ran a single magazine without a failure to extract (the case remains partially in the chamber, jamming up everything). Gun has ~250 rounds so far.

I got a replacement STI extractor but that didn't change anything.

So, short of sending the gun back for warranty work, is there anything else I can try on my own? Not really looking forward to ship it with the holidays mail craziness just around the corner..

Btw, this happens with both American Eagle as well with my reloads. All rounds pass the plunk test and the extractor does hold the live round in place (you can actually shake the slide pretty vigorously and the round will stay put).

I'm not the greatest of shooters, but my G22 didn't have this many failures, so It shouldn't be limp-writsting related (right?). Haven't had someone else try shooting it, might give that a try...

Suggestions? I really like the 1911 platform and this gun... <sigh>

Hi
I am by no means an expert on this stuff but it doesn't sound like an extraction problem as the case is not being left in the barrel but rather an ejection problem. I have no idea but does the extractor do both jobs of extracting the fired case and then ejecting it as well, or are there two different parts that do these two jobs?

You can #### around with it, if you want to, trying different extractors, and extractor tensions, and beveling and polishing, if you want to. You can polish - and/or ream and polish - the chamber, if you want to.

Or you can just send it to an expert.

I suggest Rodger Kotanko, Dark International and RK Custom Gunsmithing.

Alex, since you're in the greater Vancouver area, please go see my friend Kelly at DVC Ventures, he's authorized to do warranty support for STI for me. He'll fix you up for no charge. You can also send the gun to me; whichever you prefer.

That's absolutely great news! I'll give Kelly a call later on take it from there.

Definitely happy to avoid the STATT/mailing hassle...!

Sean gets my vote, as does STI. A great company with an even greater warranty service.

And that's why I bought my STI Spartan 9mm Single Stack from Gunnar at Armco and my magazines were purchased from Freedom Ventures in Halifax! :D

Great service from the dealers/sponsors here! :)
