STI Spartan guide rod buffer question

I'm new to 1911's. My new STI Spartan started to have some reliability problems after about 250 rds of factory ammo. I tore it down to find the black plastic guide rod buffer all chewed to hell. Do I need a new one, or can I shoot it without? Are Sti's Recoilmaster guiderods worth doing?

What sort of reliability problems are you getting,can you be more specific

Take out the buffer and throw it away,you dont need them in a 1911,and most authorities say that they only cause grief.My last 1911 went 40K before I sold it and I never had a buff in it,no cracks and that was with major IPSC loads

Dont have any personal experience with recoilmaster rods,but have read mixed reviews about them
 
Buffers are something that you'll need to replace regularly. Some people recommend routine replacement of the buffer at round counts as low as 500-1000 (to avoid buffer-related failure issues). Fortunately, they're very inexpensive. Other people have decided to avoid the use of buffers altogether.

Lose the buffer; it's like an appendix for 1911s.

While you're at it, now would be a good opportunity to swap in a short guide rod and recoil spring plug and get rid of another unnecessary departure from John Browning's design.
 
Standard ammo with standard spring weights generally don't benefit from a shockbuff. Guys running lighter springs use them to prevent frame battering. Your #### won't fall off if you take it out and don't replace it.

I own a few STI pistols and would never but a recoil buffer in any of them - not necessary period.

The Spartan didn't leave Texas with that black plastic buffer thing and it didn't leave Halifax with it.
Someone else put it in.

You don't need it to maintain your lifetime warranty, so the best thing to do is loose it and save yourself some headache.
