Hi all, I am new to shooting(waiting impatiently for my pal), and have been lurking here for a few months now, and figured it was time to ask a question.:D
Yes I know SHOULD start with a .22, just can't decide which.
So in the meantime looking farther down the road...
Which of these two pistols would you pick and why?

Thanks

i don't know these particular models but the sti is considered a top 1911 manufacturer, i think the spartan is a cool mil spec 1911 but the taurus has a stigma of a value market pistol, better than norinco i''m sure but..

if you are looking for alower to mid price range i would suggest the tangfolio witness it is in the lower 500 range and is a solid manufacture.

Starting with a .22 is like buying a 250cc bike ... you'll grow out of it in a couple of months if you go to a range twice a month.

Get a 9mm gun you would like to keep for a while and if you plan on shooting IDPA or IPSC. Some 9mm or .40 guns would give you an option to get a .22 conversion kit for them and you can start with that if you want to. Me, personally, would recommend you to check out CZ guns and their Kadet kit, but others may have different suggestions.

Again, personally, I don't see why you may need a .45 gun at all. Aside from cost of ammo, you can easily get pretty much the same results with a .40 while target shooting. You don't need to knock horses out, do you?

And to answer your question, both of your alternatives are decent guns but STI would be a better (to me) choice due to gun quality and support and parts/accessories availability.

Get the STI from Gunnar at Armco (gotta love those Armco tuned triggers). Also there is no reason NOT to get a 1911, they're a great gun in a great calibre. You'll probably want to reload though, it makes it waaaaaaay cheaper.

With the STI you have service and factory parts as an option. With the Taurus you have no support, no parts support, in short no nothing. I know the 1911 platform is after market parts friendly but I would not bet on fitting parts to a Taurus.

The STI Spartan comes out fo the Phillipines but is supported by STI. Personally if you are bent on a 1911 I would go with the STI Trojan. I have one in 9MM and it has been outstanding.

Take Care

Got my STI Spartan from Gunnar. He does a fabulous job. Got mine with a mag well and ambi safety. It's been fun shooting but expensive with the cost of ammo. If you are not in to reloading it will cost you. Go 9mm or 40 S&W. I have a M&P in 40 S&W and its a great defensive calibre.

Armco doesn't stock Taurus 1911's. Maybe a reason there?

Make mine a Spartan please. Tuned via Armco.

'Nuff said.

NAA.

Sti products can get solid back up here in Canada while the Taurus don't have any warranty in Canada yet, I love Taurus gun and has to stop thinking about them.

Taurus PT1911

I have a Taurus 1911 and think it is excellent quality, regardless of price.
Similarly kitted 1911s go for the $1300+ range.
This particular pistol has over 3000 rounds through it with ZERO issues.
So far I've fed it ball, Hollow Point & truncated ammo - all digested just fine.

I think anyone could purchase one with confidence they are receiving excellent value for money - and a fine 1911 in general.

I don't know about you but a $1000 1911 made by a South American manufacturer with a spotty past, questionable quality control and absolutely no warranty in the country doesn't like a very good deal to me. I'd much rather shell out the extra few hundred $$$ and pick up an STI.

Don't get me wrong, Taurus is a fine manufacturer, but I wouldn't take chances with it up here. Now if I was down in the US it would be a different story...

Once Freedom Ventures is up and running with Taurus, they will be a very viable option. Until they have them, there might be issues. Freedom also imports STI, so you know they're good.

Aren't the Taurus 1911's correct tolerance forged frames and slides?

Has anyone actually had issues fitting other 1911 bits into their Taurus 1911s as a starting basis for a tinker 1911?

Some people are making it sound like a worse option than buying a Norinco 1911 Sport(which is a great basis for tinkering I think)

Thanks for the info guys.
After doing some looking around, The Spartan is $879, and the Taurus is $963.
It sorta looks like the Spartan is the better deal.
@CeeZer; no I don't need to knock out horses, it is just a cool gun:D
Is the CZ-75 IPSC/IPDA compliant?
When I get a gun in 9mm, it would be my first choice.
I could just rent a .22 from DVC for a couple months to learn on then buy whatever gun catches my eye.;)

Raven Concealment advises that their rail holsters for various 1911's will not fit the Taurus - that's all I'm aware of, and it's pretty minor. Honestly though, I wouldn't pay what folks are paying for the Taurus if I wanted to tinker (that's why we've got Norcs)
