How much does this handgun usually start at, do any of the dealer sites on here sell it, and do you recommend it?

I'm looking at this for potentially my first handgun. It's between this or a Norc

Edit: although I just saw the Smith and Wesson M&P Range and Carry kit. That seems like a pretty good deal. Out if the 3, which do you recommend?

You did not mention the particular caliber. For the price of a Spartan, you might also be interested in a CZ 75B. Glock is a good gun. Ruger SR9 or SR40, Jericho 941. If you belong to a club, try asking fellow members to try their pistols. Buy the suitable ammo and see for yourself. Things to consider: Grip, sight and weight. A Norinco is a cheap entry to targetshooting but needs a lot of upgrades. SAMs seems to be getting popular. And if you have not shot any pistol before, start with a .22 cal. until you get comfortable. Cheap on ammo and a good start before moving to a bigger caliber. Ruger Mk III, Browning Buckmark and GSG/SIG 1911-22 are very popular.

the lowest i have seen for a new spartan was $749. most seen to be more around $800. I would recomend the spartan for sure.

The Smith and Wesson kit with three mags, holster, and mag pouches is best deal out there for a new shooter.

Get the M&P in 9mm.

Spartan.

None of the other guns mentioned thus far will have as nice of a trigger, it's a single action 1911. The firing mechanism parts in the gun are STI parts, not Armscor parts (phillipines, where its built).

If you don't want to spend as much dough, I hear the Armco tuned Norinco's are pretty good. I have not shot one though.

The M&P is a exactly what it says it is, Military and Police. It's pretty utilitarian. I find the grip odd with any of the back straps, the trigger is ok in my opinion. Some people hate it. Keep in mind it is striker fired and so when you pull the trigger you are also cocking the striker half way, so the trigger will be a bit heavier than most single actions.

I believe Freedom Ventures is the Distributor in Canada for STI, there are many dealers for it just check out some of the banners up top.

Just checked out Freedom Ventures and the Spartan is too expensive for my pocket right now.

And this will be my first handgun so I want something that I can learn with, enjoy, and eventually I'll move on to something else. I have shot before but this will be the first one I own myself.

I just traded my practically new 9mm Spartan in at the Shooting Edge for an STI Ranger II. It was a great gun, but i just wanted a commander sized 1911. Give Justin at the Edge a call and buy it at a used price. I only put about 300-400 rounds through it.

Get a 22 pistol then. That way it will still be relevant when you get a larger bore pistol and it will keep you in budget ammo-wise. If you can't afford a $790 gun, the ammo is gonna kill your budget anyway.

Unless you barely ever shoot, ammo will almost always out-price the gun.

I have a Spartan in 45 and absolutely love it. Excellent value for the money and if you don't reload I think a 9mm Spartan would be the way to go.

That being said I also have and would highly recommend a ruger 22/45 pistol, especially if you eventually want to own 1911's. The ruger always comes with me to the range and gets alot of use. Several new shooters that come with me are noticably improving their pistol shooting skills by spending alot of time with the .22. For the price of a Spartan you can buy a quality 22 pistol and a case of 5000 rounds (mine loves CCI blazers).

For a first gun a good .22LR is a wise choice. Cheap to shoot and fun. I have a STI Spartan and love it, it is .45ACP. I love the 1911 platform. The cost of ammo will out pace the cost of the gun in short order. You can get into reloading but that too will run you a fair chunk of change to get into it. After the .22LR the next cheapest round would be the 9mm and than maybe the .38 Special which can also shoot .357 Mag. Or more correctly a .357 can shoot .38 Special. This might sound like a crazy idea but many find a revolver easier to shoot accurate than a semi-auto. If this idea interests you Ruger sells a convertible that shoots .357Mag/.38Special and 9mm but it is a single action revolver.

Good luck with your decision.

Jimmiea.

my first gun was an m&p 9 and i love it but then i bought a spartan 9 and havent shot the m&p much since then. its a great gun for the money, nice trigger weight, decent sights and i think easier to shoot than the m&p.
someone mentioned the sr9 too, love it as well, cant go wrong for the price.

My first gun about a year ago was a .22 Sig Mosquito. Despite all you may have heard about them, mine has been a blast with no problems other than crappy ammo. Only thing was, about 6 months went by and I started to get a little bored with it. It is still a great gun but I needed something more. So I went to the local gunshop too see what was up and also I researched the interwebz. What I found was I really like the look and feel of 1911's. Also a couple guys at the range let me feel up and shoot their 1911's. From what I could see, the STI Spartan was the way to go, it was in my price range-750$. It appeared very well made, it was accurate, it looked bad-ass, and it was a 1911. It also came in 9mm, cuz I don't reload and can't afford to shoot factory .45 ammo at $20- $25 per 50. Also I could not find a single bad thing said about it. Literally nothing but glowing reports everywhere I looked. And I looked pretty much everywhere. Alot of the guys I have met at my range shoot STI products(IDPA/IPSC stuff) and they all said they make the good stuff. I was not disapointed. I don't think I could have made a better choice. So if you get a chance, check one out you won't be disapointed.
Just my 2 centavos:)

For what it's worth a local dealer had a norinco 9mm and let me fondle it. The trigger pull had to be 8 pounds I mean I thought the safety was on at first could not believe it was a 1911 single action trigger!!! Maybe it was a bad one and of course the trigger will lighten up over time but wow. That would be a tough pistol to learn on to put it mildly. Go for the M&P:)

I own two Spartans, one in 45 auto and the other in 9mm.
The latter one I aqcuired from Freedom Ventures last year for $720.00.

This pistols are the best value on the market period!
All STI parts, with excellent triggers, adjustable sights, match grade barrels and bushings etc..

The Spartans have the exact same triggers, sights etc.. as my Trojans, which are at least $ 400.00 more.

Both guns are very accurate, extremely easy to shoot and hit what you are aiming at (which is important to me :) ).

I would highly recommend these pistols to any shooter.

Mine are definitaly keepers.
