thinking about adding a .45 1911 and it will probably be one of these (an STI for sure anyway).

both of these are very nice and no doubt more accurate than i. this would be a range / target gun. not looking to compete any time soon but who knows down the road. curious if anyone has experience with one (preferably both) or has an informed opinion.

thanks

The Rangemaster would have very limited application in IPSC. With the FLDC it would play in Standard but the 8 round mags would be a disadvantage. Something like a 5 inch Trojan (which can play in Classic Division without handicap) would have more potential for playing organized gun games in the future.

Ya I am leaning towards the range master. Kind of wish they made it in 40. The other 1911 variant that is intriguing me now is the Coonan because i would not have to add a new calibre to the mix and it has some great reviews but it is a very different animal I would imagine.

The Rangemaster costs a lot more than the Spartan. But if it will suit your needs you get what amounts to a fully customized and trigger slicked up gun right out of the box. The time I shot a Rangemaster for two mags it was like the bullets were radar guided to the target's bullseye. I easily matched or bettered my best ever group with ANY other handgun.... then it shot tighter yet with the second magazine. Oh sure, some of it was luck. But the gun certainly played a big part in this.

By contrast the Spartan is a nice gun for the money. And as noted above it's more applicable to a wider range of competitions and accessories. But the trigger feel and built in accuracy cannot hold a candle to the Rangemaster. Other than both being STI and both being 1911's it's almost like there simply isn't a common basis for comparison due to the radically different features, price point, feel and performance.
