STI......word of caution

Nice set up!

Where did you get your Dawson mags?

1200 rounds in the last three weeks, no issues whatsoever. 700 factory (Winchester white box bulk and CCI Blazer) and 500 reloads with AIM 124gn pushed out with 3.5gn of Clays.

I have 3 STI single stacks..2 in .45 a RangerII and a USPSA...both have functioned flawlessly. The 3d is a Trojan in 9mm and I have had feeding problems...probably mag related. A gunsmith once told me to avoin 1911s in anything other than .45 . Maybe he was right.

^ nop, he is a ####ty gunsmith, avoid at all costs lol

as proven by the classic division of IPSC, 1911s can not only do 9mm, they can do it as race guns :)

At the same time the 1911 was designed around the .45 acp round nose...this makes it easy for anybody to make a .45 that will run.
A 9mm 1911 that runs well is usually offered by the higher quality manufacturers and is a well built gun.

My 9mm STI's and others I know run flawlessly....need good mags (Cobra) and proper length ammo (longer vs shorter).

Got an STI Trojan and a Glock 21...both have performed flawlessly so far. (maybe 300 rounds each)

Doctor said I was ok to be out on day passes. :runaway:

my cheap spartan runs with any length ammo and any mags without any issues. 9mm seems to have been figured out in 1911s, .40 is still an issue

I hear you. I Just got the new STI GI model and it came with a front sight bent over to the right that was very noticeable. I only put one clip through it and it shoot fine as long as you aim 4" to the left of centre at 15m. Oh and the grip safety to main spring housing gap is the ####s. It just catches so that it don't fly apart. Yes the guy in Halifax said send it back but what's he going to do bend the sight back over and tell me the gap is normal. No thanks I straighten the sight and live with the #### fit of the safety. Just so disappointed after reading so much good stuff about STI. My brothers old 70 ser Colt is twice the gun of the STI

possible you got a bad sample so maybe they will replace? Freedom ventures is a top shelf outfit and will make sure you are happy. if you opt not to take them up on the offer, that is your call.

You bought it used or fiddled with it yourself?
I had an STI RangeMaster. Worked well with most ammo. Didn't work good with some shorter bullet length and lighter bullets -- they were doing a nose dive on me. Fixed with changing ammo diet :)

If you are thinking of buying an STI make sure it works as it should. Our new edge, which cost a bundle has been with the gunsmith for the last month. Had to withdraw from black badge due to FTF. 40% failure is too much!!!! The glocks kept shooting all day. I thought if you spend a lot of money you get a better product...wrong on this one. Bought 5 extra STI mags and none of them feed properly.

Don't want to rain on anybodys parade, just a caution if you are thinking of buying one.

My STI 5" Tactical Single-Stack required several hundred rounds to break in and begin running reliably. Since it passed through those first 3 or 400 rounds it has been totally reliable. And this with STI mags. I don't know about the 2011 double-stacks, but the single-stack .45s seem to be fine, perfectly reliable handguns. My experience has been very positive. I knew from reading online that the STI would be tight from the factory and would require some break-in. I'm sorry to hear about the OPs issues and the fact that STI QC may be hit and miss. I guess I am one of the lucky ones...

I'm a huge fan of Sti pistols...but it is very disappointing when these issues keep repeating......apparently tight tolerances do cause probs....go figure....good luck, l know you will love it...eventually.

Been looking to buy another 1911 for my herd, the more i look and find out...
Probably will buy another LB from the House... JP.

My Lawman 5.0 has tight fit but smooth slide action and never had any single issue with all the mags i have from Trophy match, LB, wilson and chip mcormick.

FWIW this was an eleven month old thread that was inexplicably bumped this week. The OP hasn't been on since July and probably doesn't care any more.

There are other people here, so still good info

I don't have a problem with that but why is that not done at the factory??? Paying 3k for a gun then having to pay to tune the mags is retarded and I won't do that again.

Neither will my friends. A 5K Open gun that won't run out of the box.....totally unacceptable. Don't care who makes it.

IPSC shooters are a funny breed, apparently this is completely acceptable and to be expected.

Don't think a rifle shooter would be that lax, a 5K rifle better work and work well, out of the box for years and years.
Would Porsche owners be OK with a $130K 911 that requires a mechanic to tune the brakes and engine to get it to work.
How long do you thing Porsche would last with that mindset. They wouldn't.

Others and myself included will take their hard earned money elsewhere thank you very much.
