Here is my dilemma. In my Savage model 99E in .308 I am having issue with fired cases sticking in the chamber. When it is clean, I can fire 10 rounds with no problems. The 11th round and every round after, the cases will stick. They will come out with a light tap on a cleaning rod inserted from the muzzle end. When I clean the barrel and chamber, the rifle works fine again until the 11th round.

I have checked the cases after firing using vernier calipers . They are not deformed in any way.

So, any ideas on what may be the problem? Any ideas on a solution?

Thanks all in advance.

I had cases sticking in my 99F in .308, but the cases had been left in my leather holder from last season and they had oxidized and had a bit of green grime on them. Once I cleaned the rifle I cleaned the remaining cases with steel wool and never had another problem. Any chance there is any grime on the cases?

Need more info.Reloads or factory ammo is first. Have you checked your bolt face to ss if it is grimed up a bit and not grabbing the case rim properly.

I have tried factory ammo and my own reloads. I thought at first it may be dirty cases, so I cleaned and polished them to almost a mirror finish. The result was no change at all. The bolt is grabbing the case very well. The bolt will not open completely on a stuck case unless I push it out with the cleaning rod.

My friend had a similar issue with his 99. His problem was the extractor wasn't in line to the bolt, it was pointing a little outwards......hardly noticable. A quick cleaning showed small grit behind the extractor so it wasn't sitting flush. Once cleaned the stuck case issue disappeared.

My extractor is grabbing very well. The action will hardly open when a case is stuck in the chamber, enough so the extractor is against the rim.

When it happens, I can pull the lever down about an eighth of an inch. With the bolt partially open like that, I use the cleaning rod. The amount of effort needed to force the case out and push the bolt open, is only slightly more than I can mechanically do using only the lever.

A live round will not get stuck.

Since you've eliminated the extractor, your chamber, as others have mentioned seems to be the culprit. Check your fired brass for very fine dimples or bumps, possibly leaving a fine scratch line on the case when extracted Even the smallest pit or bump caused by corrosion or foreign matter will cause the fired case to hang up. A fine scratch appearing on your cases would most likely appear at the same location.

Bumps, scratches and bulges were the first things I checked for before measuring the brass. The only thing I could see there was that the brass seem to be rougher, like some one had taken a fine emery cloth to it. Like I said above, I polished the brass to a near mirror finish.

The 99E was the economy model rifle produced by Savage. Some of the chambers were a little rough. Try a bit of fine emery on the chamber walls and clean. If this doesn't work try a differrent type of ammo. The small size difference from one company to another might just help

Trip to the range done. Rifle now worse. Cases now stick on the third shot.

I had used 800 grit emery cloth to clean the walls, and scrubbed it. (I was going to do that any way, so no blame is made by me to anyone) I have plans now to re-chamber.

I also found that for reloading for several savage rifles in .308 calbre, I had to use small base resizing dies or some cases would not fully enter the chamber and others were sticking on the way out. hope this helps.

Don't know if this what you are facing but I had an old 1899 in 30/30 that exhibited those same issues but got to where pretty much every case would not come out with out help. Frankly it was a well worn gun, barrel too but it would shoot very well, frustrating. A factory fresh cartridge would stick and when freed looked like it was leather grained. There was no corrosion in the chamber and it felt smooth to the finger but was pocked. The case brass would take the surface of the chamber and then it was stuck there. If you waited till it was cool it would sometimes come out with the extractor. Tried scrubbing and polishing but still stuck. I was told that it needed a new barrel and rechambering but I couldn't afford it. Sold it to a friend just for the parts.

Hope that is not what the problem is with yours.

This is what I'm facing. I removed the barrel and machined the receiver end by the length of a thread. I used a finishing reamer to clean up the chamber. After inspecting the re-finished chamber, I noticed it still wasn't very good. Walls of the chamber have spots where the reamer didn't clean up. I need another barrel for this rifle.

A model 99E with a 111 barrel. :)

Success!!! I didn't use the above barrel in the end. I did fix the original by shortening the chamber end by one thread then reaming. Shot and cycled 15 rounds. every spent case came out with no issues. I am happy now with the rifle.

I don't get out to the range very often, that's why the length of time between posts.
