This thread is for sharing the Planning, Process, 'how to' and results of your rifle beautification Projects.

I will be getting some etching & design work done on my Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun as well as my Rossi Ranch hand and I will be sharing the process and results for others who may want to do the same.

This is an OPEN thread so if you are beautifying a rifle (or have done previously and would like to share) please feel free to share.

While that work in pics 1 and 2 is incredibly well done and involves an enormous amount of talent which I certainly lack, IMO that takes away from the natural beauty of the rifle by cluttering it up. I would prefer some nice tasteful checkering like the grip in pic 3, beautiful work, but not taken too far.

As I look a little more, pic 1 could be quite nice so long as it was used with a tasteful stock, with the reciever as the only decorative portion of the rifle. pic 2 in my opinion still goes too far, it looks like very well done work however.

Its art, some people like to sit around and critisize someone else's art all day , others can just enjoy it for what it is. ;)

....takes away from the natural beauty of the rifle ...

I agree, but will take it one step further

I don't think checkering is needed nor do I want it.

I have never shot a gun I couldn't hold, and find the bigger recoilers hurt more with checkering than without.

as well, it is really hard to find nicely done, as most takes away from the natural beauty of the wood.

then there are the issues of just poor craftsmanship. I saw some pics in a gun rag showcasing the Gunsmith Guild guns...and the checkering was horrible, even worse considering the gun was valued at over $22,000.00

nope, give me a nice wood grain, smooth lines and a nice flowing stock over checkering any day

as for metalwork, I find it CAN be done tastefully, if very discreet, and subdued, and just enough to catch an eye. When it becomes the centerpiece, it becomes gaudy, as is a relief sculpting on the stock.

sorry if that offends anyone, but I think the beauty IS the Gun

Plain jane stock, with A little bit of sanding and varnish it goes a long way
