Still hunting

Check out Rodney Elmer on youtube, they've got a ton of videos about still hunting, but more specifically tracking deer in snow.

They tend to walk slowly and grunt fairly often, but they've got all kinds of tips on what to look for, what to expect in certain situations and some nice bucks they end up getting.

I use the wind, as mentioned already, and if the snow is crunchy, make some deer noises. Not too many, but grunts, bleats, maybe some rattling. Often can hear a deer before I see one. Killed two whitetail bucks last year doing this.

Did a lot of still hunting in the Alberta bush, around Cold Lake.

The woods is a noisy frikken place. I found that once you got in to the rhythm of the noise around you, you could make pretty good time through the woods. And snow has nothing on the amount of noise that a layer of very crisp dry leaves can make.

Saw lots of deer, got lots of deer, ate lots of venison.

I found that there was a direct relationship between how much time a fella spent out in the woods, and how successful he was. Learn to pay attention to what is going on around you, and you get to see an awful pile of interesting things, as far as the local wildlife goes.

Relax. Slow down a lot. Learn to look around without twitching like a bird on caffeine, or a squirrel with the jitters. Slow smooth movements don't attract the eye like fast ones.

If you are seeing deer, even running away ones, at least you are hunting the right places. If you didn't see deer, you never know if there were none there, or if they simply slipped away. Or stood there and watched you pass.

One step, look all around, wait, look again, wait. Two steps, look all around, wait, look again, wait. One step, look all around, wait, look again, wait, wait, wait, look again. One step, look all around, wait, look again, wait. Two steps, look all around, wait, look again, wait.

Again and again and again. If you cover 200 yards in a hour you’re going way too fast.

this mentality is the way to go, you're trying to blend in with the bush, to do this you need to be slow and make as little noise as possible.

quite often while i am 'still hunting' or Stalking, it is not uncommon to hear the deer before you see them..

Stalking is by far the best way to hunt , your in nature, new sights around each corner and it feels like its a bit of a chase... well it is, hide an seek.

each to their own though
