I spent about 2 hours glassing 2 does 3 fawns and 1 massive buck. He's a 11 maybe 12 pointer but still in velvet. The 3 other smaller bucks I've seen are still in velvet and the 6 pointer I hit with my truck was in velvet. With bow season coming I've been scouting a lot. Is it just a late year for whitetails or what? I know its early yet but it is mid august shouldn't they be shedding it soon?

yup the first couple weeks of Sept they will start loosing their velvet. I wish we had an early season so I can bag this 12pt I keep seeing on my property. He would look mighty fine on my wall with his velvet still on.

I just shot a young Bull Moose, and he is in full velvet yet.
Antlers are not quite fully developed.
Still have rounded points rather than sharp.
Antlers are somewhat "rubbery" also.
Normal for this time of year.
Eagleye.

This one died in November, still with most of his velvet.

Where I'm at the whitetail will start to shed in the first week of September. I have some video on a few big mule deer with velvet on into the end of September (full velvet). Last year was a bit of a different story though, as everything started to rub off within the first few days of September. It all depends where you're at and what the climate is like.
